Ouch!

At least there's some bullion value to these.

Bullion value? They're not genuine, aka fake so they may not even be made out of gold right?
  • BlackBeardBlackBeard Posts: 1,064
Wow, that is a truly painful result. I feel for the submitter on that one, he/she must be hopping mad at his source right about now.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

Quite often, the fakes actually are very generous in their bullion value - especially ones from the early 1970's when there was a larger percentage spread between the genuine coin value and bullion prices.

They probably are not gold or at least not very much gold.

I hope that he remembers where they came from. If he purchased them in person I would be making a trip back real soon.

The stamped Lebanese counterfeits are actually pretty nice coins, and pass the rub test for content, even though they are less gold.

  • Ouch, that is going to leave a mark. At best, it’s a counterfeiter working on his/her skills (and was nailed). At worst, it’s someone who just got their teeth kicked in on the 'bay.

Claychaser, I apologize in advance for derailing your thread. I just received my Lonesome John Detecting Counterfeit Gold Coins Book 2 and all I can say is "wow." The lesson learned is be very careful when you purchase raw gold. And/or make sure you can return them if the coins are found to be fake.

Might not have been eBay. There are boiler room operations selling bogus gold.

That's exactly why I would never buy raw gold on eBay!

I don't think that will quite cover it and I do feel for the submitter.

    China?
  • That is not good! You kind of wonder what's happening with a submission like that; there has to be something fishy either with the source or the submitter of the coins.
