1916 Buffalo Nickel

Hello all,

Is there a possibility of this being a double die? I have looked several times, and don't think so, but want to be sure before listing it on the bay...

Thanks!

Kevin

  • Not sure if it matters, but here is the reverse...I saw something about full horns as well, the reverse is very well struck...

Nice coin cant see the date need a close up did it look like this image

    Hoard the keys.
  • No, but I don;t know how subtle the DD can be to be considered a DD...are all the 1916s that obvious?

If it is not like the pic they may call it mechanical Doubling or hub Doubling.

No, it's not a DDO. The 16 buff has REALLY clear doubling in grades above fine.

No, all of them are that obvious, depending on wear. but the strength of the spread doesn't vary. Only the one die is known. There are other parts of the coin other than the date that show a wide spread and clear doubling-the feathers, the ribbon ties, the braid, and the neck. Dateless examples can be discerned by this additional doubling.

Absolutely not a Doubled Die. Not only would it be visible on the date, but the longest feather would also show significant doubling.

  • OK, not a DD....

Thanks for the imput - it is now on the bay! =)

    Thanks,

    Kevin
  • Shamika is right on target. Not only can you see the diagnostic doubled date, but I prefer to check the feathers for doubling to the south-east. The inidan's profile and the ribbon are also doubled to the east.

Yours is not a doubled die.

It has already been answered but just to be clear.

There are those that have tried to sell 1916's with very slight doubling (mechanical doubling) as doubled dies.

This is what you call FRAUD!!

The others are correct. The 1916 DDO is very obvious and if this coin was one, you would have no doubt. That is precisely why they are worth so much, Dramatic Doubling.

Well that and the fact that they are rare as heck!!

  • I have it listed as a plain ole' 1916 on eBay... it is still a nice coin, well struck and in great condition...maybe I'll make a few bucks, who knows?!
