I really need some opinions on 7070 selections.

It is a sad month for me... I will be downsizing my collection to a Dansco Type Album and a few proofs - new houses are expensive! I would like to know what everyone looks for when filling a 7070. I only have a small piece of the classic coins so far and the rest will have to wait until next year but I do have some nice proof and MS+ examples of the modern stuff. My question is, if you have both types in front of you, which would you put in your set? Proof or Mint State?

I have both proof and MS in my 7070 - as well AG6, F, VF, XF, and AU. I started out wanting the whole set in XF-AU, but came across a really nice proof Mercury dime that was cheap, then a proof Franklin half, proof Kennedy, proof state quarter, etc, etc. So the matched XF-AU set is out the window and I buy what I like and upgrade if I like something better.

Strictly Business Strikes in my 7070. My goal is an even look to the set. A 7070 like Baley has is my goal when I grow up.

You're telling me. Completing the non-gold portion of the type set coincided almost exactly with buying a house. I haven't purchased a coin for more than $10 in months.

I think it depends on the coin, although I do have a few proof coins in the type set, a 1978 Ike and a 1999 SBA.

for me:

Base metal moderns - proof
Silver - Mint State (bicentennial, silver eagle, modern commem)

I like the look of the mint state better on silver coins.

I think most 20th century coins could be proofs. Exceptions could be the walking liberty, peace dollar, or the gold coinage. It comes down to cost and the overall look you're going for. Moderns should definitely be proofs, though.

I think my only Proof coin in my 7070 is an Ike dollar. The business strike issues looked way too drab and "worn" even if they were MS-65 examples.

That really depends upon what looks good to your eye. I prefer only business strikes but there is no right or wrong way to build a 7070 imo.

It really is all up to you. I would try to get the most difficult coins out of the way first (Classic Head Large Cent, and the two seated dollars). Some coins are very easy to find in BU, some are not, and can be very pricey. But do not buy the first coin you see, someone once said that a bad coin will bother you more than an empty spot.

When you start the set, clean the mylar sleeves, use a glove to insert the coins, and clean the pockets with a compressed air can so there is no debris rubbing amoug the coin. And...have fun! But dont break the bank :-)

In my 7070 I have proofs for my birth year, cent through commem silver dollar, and uncs for all other modern coins. If I weren't doing the birth year though, I'd opt for unc only since not all proofs can be found in cameo like moderns.

I really need some opinions on 7070 selections.
