Ebay Question-- what's the deal with "Bidder 1", "Bidder 2", etc. persons who b
I frequently take a look at Ebay listings. For some reason, I see bidders called "Bidder 1" and "Bidder 2" a lot. I thought that each Ebay user name had to be unique. There is no way that this same person just happens to bid on the listings that I am always looking at. At first I assumed that private auctions assigned these types of bidder names automatically, but I looked closely at the auctions (maybe not too closely), and I don't see anything that says it's a private listing. For example, in the Ebay listing in the thread about the 1885CC Morgan, I cannot determine if it is a private auction. Can anyone help, or does this question make no sense?

<< <i>that reflects a change that eBay made a while ago to help keep all members anonymous. >>
so Meg can encourage shill bids, thus making more $$$ for ebay
<< <i>When an auction reaches 200.00 people can only see bidder 1 etc.

What's the purpose of this? Does Ebay assign the high bidder a new name, such as "Bidder 1" or am I not getting it?

If a scammer does not know a persons ebay handle they can't send bogus 2nd chance offers.

And replaced with a scenario where the scammer knows that people can't alert high bidders on bogus auctions and fake coins any more.
Plus we never get to see "scumnuker" winning these bogus auctions any more, either.
<< <i>The change is great for sellers who like to shill bid their auctions. >>
That is exactly my feeling as well! It provides "cover" for the shills that previously they were not afforded

At the end the high bidders name will show but not until the end.
I think the worst thing is when you see a scam you can't warn the bidder.
Where have you been? It's the new anti-shilling, pro-shilling policy.
If you hold your cursor over the bidding details view it will give you some info on the bidder's activity with this seller.
It makes it a little more difficult to prove shill bidding.

<< <i>I often see this on coins well under $200 for some reason. I don't like the protection it gives the shill bidders. >>
I have seen this too. I think it happens when the seller has set a reserve over $200.
I agree that it opens many up to shills.

No, The first bidder is #1, 2nd bidder is #2 etc........
I don't like it for several reasons, first of all because of the possibility of shill bidding as discussed above and because it puts a veil of suspicion on everyone.....I miss the clarity.
