SEGS coin grading

Just wondered what people thought of SEGS coin grading. Is it reliable and accurate or should I stay away? Thanks

I have actually had to crack SEGS coins out and sell them raw to get decent $ for them. Sorry Larry.
Still it's always best to buy the coin and not the holder.

I try to stick with PCGS or NGC personally. They seem to be the two most respected in the industry.

    Worse than raw? Hardly.

SEGS may not get the respect of the first tier slabbers, and that's mostly deserved, but to say "worse than raw" is not even close.

If you have two coins for sale-- let's say '09-S VDBs but it could be any valuable, commonly faked coin -- one raw and one in an SEGS slab, you'd think the raw coin is better? That the raw coin has more resale value? I have a little more respect for Larry Briggs and SEGS than that. I wouldn't always rely on the grade since it can be hit or miss with them, but I'd still MUCH rather have an SEGS slab than raw if authenticity was a question. It's not even close.

They're not first-tier but still light-years ahead of the NNCs, NTCs, SGSs and the other alphabet soups of the world.

I've seen many accurately graded SEGS coins, but most are off by a couple points

I'd stick with pcgs or ngc or even anacs for cheaper stuff or just for authenticity or variety attributions as long as it's not a trade dollar LOL.

I like SEGS. I have been sending them BB's from PCGS that came back altered sufaces. All 3 were properly labeled with the problem. Now, I have a few comparison coins.

I have an 1850 double eagle in a SEGS AU-55 holder. It's been lightly cleaned. I'm too lazy to get it out and see if it says so on the holder and it hasn't been imaged yet. It's a nice coin but it's been cleaned. It will be sold at price to match it's true net grade. And that's in the 50 range for this specimen. Some are more, some less.

I have bought a few SEGS at shows but I make sure to run it by some others whose grading I know to be accurate. I find most accuracy with ICG, PCGS, NGC, & ANACS and generally don't feel compelled to get second opinions on those four services.

I thought SEGS was one of those distant third tiers, I guss I am wrong.

From now on I will pay more attention to SEGS coins. image

I have purchased several very nice coins in SEGS holders. Buy the coin for what you value it for and only use the numerical grade on the label as a base range to start from.....kinda like what I do with PCGS and NGC plastic also.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I'd say they are one of those distant third tiers but it doesn't mean every coin is bad, some can be better than they graded them.

Last 2 I got both are varieties.... One was graded AU58, crossed to PCGS as a 62RB and the correct variety. The next coin bought sight unseen was also a variety on the slab and F15, the grade was right on but it isn't any variety and I have no clue if they did it as a typo or mis-attribution. Fortunately it's cost was less than the grading fee so I'm still ahead because the other coin was a bargain. The second coin is now a paperweight image

I'd say they're the same as raw, you need to see the coin and grade and determine problems/authenticity based on what you see but that's only based on the few I've had or seen.

I have only one SEGS coin, a 1938-D Buff with some really nice toning, they graded it a 66. I stick with PCGS and NGC since I learned my lesson on some of those "other graders", but I like the look of this one, and what I paid for it ($46).

People might be getting SGS and SEGS confused.

SGS - Total crap. Don't even bother
SEGS - They are worth a closer look.
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

I had coins slabbed by SEGS and I have been happy with them.

I will say,buy the coin not the slab.

I also agree. SEGS is third-tier, but that's better than a lot of fly-by-night "grading services" you see nowadays.

Buy the coin not the holder; in other words don't believe the grade on the slab unless you see the coin first hand and see that it is accurate!

I have found SEGS coins graded about right with any problems noted on the label. Of course for "condition" rarities only PCGS and NGC have market acceptance.

I just purchased my first SEGS graded coin on ebay. It is a 1905 MS64 RB Indain Head cent. I got it cheap. We will see how the grading is when I get it in hand. I bought it for my 7070 type set.

I switched over to paper and barely have any coins left, but the one slab I've held on to is from SEGS. One of them 1938 Schlag Jefferson pattern things. I agree with northcoins...hands down the best looking slab on the market. Do newer SEGS slabs still come with a small, as-made crack in the plastic?

I've found quite a few PQ for the grade coins in SEGS slabs. Not often but it's still worth looking at the coins, and often they are priced well below NGC/PCGS slabbed coins.

I see an awful lot of SEGS holdered coins peppered about dealers tables. So my question is: Do these dealers trust SEGS's grading capabilities or are they getting them slabbed as such to elicite a higher grade. Nevermind the "buy the coin, not the slab" disclaimer. I understand that some of these slabs can be acquired from other sources and end up in a dealer's inventory but there still seems to be a lot of them floating about and some dealers have almost exclusively SEGS product. Somebody somewhere is sending them to SEGS. If they are indeed a fringe third tier TPG, then we have more unscrupulous dealers then we think (assuming the SEGS assigned grades pricing are commensurating with the equivalent "1st tier" assigned grades pricing).

I have only bought one SEGS slabbed coin. I took a chance on an MS63 bust half dime on eBay. Actually, it wasn't much of a chance since I got it for AU50 money. I cracked it out and sent it to ANACS where it came back AU58. It was no MS63, but I thought it might go 61 or 62.

imo Segs and IGC and recent Anacs are close as far as reliability and consistancy very 3erd tier. I have a few Segs slabs that I bought right but for the most part I stick with PCGS NGC old ANACS.
