$1 Copper Liberty Defies US Mint

EVANSVILLE, Indiana -- Liberty Dollar announced today that it has issued a new $1 Copper Liberty that defies the U.S. Mint's previous warning that only the use, not possession, of the new currency was illegal.

The new one dollar Copper Liberty is the latest effort to defend the consumer's right to use gold, silver or anything of choice in commerce. The new one dollar Copper is silver dollar size and contains one ounce of pure copper. Each Copper Liberty will feature the same Liberty Head and Torch designs as on its popular $20 Silver Liberty.

Liberty Dollar reports that over 10,000 Copper Libertys were ordered in the first 24 hours. The U.S. Mint's warning that only using, not possession, was illegal has drawn an increasing number of people to the Liberty Dollar and its underdog's stance for individual liberty and real money.

Bernard von NotHaus, the free-market advocate behind the Liberty Dollar, explains that his overnight success with the Liberty Dollar is as easy to understand as the Copper Liberty itself. "Hey, it is 1 ounce of pure copper for a buck. It is simple. It represents real value. It isn't anything like the U.S. dollar."

Von NotHaus said the popularity of the new Copper Liberty Dollar speaks for itself. "The Liberty Dollar is larger, heavier, more metal content, and larger bullion value than the U.S. Mint dollar. The only thing lacking is government approval."

Of course that is one thing von NotHaus abhors. He thinks money should be the domain of the people who use it and its value derived in the marketplace, not by the Federal Reserve.

Von NotHaus dismisses physical comparisons to the U.S. Mint's new Presidential Dollar. "How could there be any similarity?" von NotHaus asks, "Just compare the size, weight, color, material, face value, and metal value of each. The Copper Liberty is 100% pure metal. Not an alloy from the U.S. Mint!"

Von NotHaus says, "The new $1 Copper Liberty says a lot about our country and its money ... and how they have changed. People have the right to collect any kind of medallion and use anything they mutually choose as barter."

Please note: the $1 Copper Liberty is not to be used for legal tender in the United States.

I think it's incredibly tacky to have the registered trademark symbol on that "coin."

I'd avoid these because there have been so many misleading medallions sold over the years with misleading hype that people think they're coins. These say "one dollar" but it's not a dollar so it's misleading. I'd say OK if only said "one ounce pure copper" but it's not a dollar. It should clearly say "not legal tender".

The only reason I could see to have one is as a conversation piece or if you like medallions.

The irony is that the Liberty dollar people have built their entire company on anti-fiat money rhetoric, and then they put out a "$1" medallion worth $0.22 of copper. The same exact value at melt as an Ike or some ordinary quarters!

Still a cool concept and coin imho. The US Mint needs some competition. In 100 years maybe it will be considered a Pattern coin, maybe not. What else is being minted these days that has any original artistic design? NOTHING.

The concept of privately issued money is a good one. It's a shame that guys like this will give the concept a bad name.

It least it's worth a base of .22c. The Prezzybucks are worth what? .12c in base metal? Still a piece of history although maybe somewhat tacky!image

No, a Pres buck is worth 1 USD. I just spent one on a coca cola zero at the convenience store across the street.

I'm seeking one myself, since I already have one of the 1/20th ounce silver "dollars" from 2003 and the copper one would pair up well with that as a set of novelty items.
I think the reason they are issuing the copper pieces is an attempt to mock the government's recent attempts to advocate against them and to capitalize on the popularity of the new US dollar president coins, which have even less metal content value.

True. I also bet that he didn't pay $1 for the thing. Someone is making money of people and there is NO benefit except to a small handful of people selling it.
Same discussion that was held before....and, yes, the USMint does make money as well, but like I said in the other discussion months ago, I would rather them get it than a handful of people that aren't even upfront and honest about it just being a way for them to get rich.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
