1985 OPeeChee wax rip

I got the urge to rip after last week's live rip and ordered a 1985 OPC baseball box. I didn't expect it to arrive so quickly (paid on Saturday, arrived this afternoon) I haven't posted scans in quite awhile...hopefully I remember how....

    good luck on the rip.

i opened one about 3-4 weeks ago and had some major centering issues. if i get a chance i may join you in posting scans on this thread.

looking forward to see what condition yours are in. did you order from BBCE? i did not.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

  • Scan will have to be 2 per pack...10 cards and a poster. The gum is on the poster and comes off rather easily, with little damage (so far) The scan of the poster will be on the 2nd scan.
    Ok here goes nothing....

Okay, that didn't work let's try again
  • David- No, I didn't buy them from BBCE either. I don't believe he had 85 OPC listed last week.

    Here's part 2 of the 1st pack

    image
  • Pack #2

    image
  • Here's the 2nd scan from pack 2 w/ the Nettles, Iorg and LaCorte rescans.
    The poster is Tony Fernandez

    image
  • LOL... the scan still cut off the right border and bottom borders.

The bottom card in both packs have a ding on the middle right border (or bottom of the card when looking at the back)

Did the guy you bought them from, have a bunch of OPC boxes for the 80's listed last week? I bought an 84 box from that guy, but I have not received it yet.image

I got one of the 91s from that guy. I had snipes set on most of his stuff but most of it went higher than it's worth. Over $40 for 1990 Fleer Candain boxes? Almost $30 for a 1990 OPC box? $70 for 1982 OPC boxes? I don't think he had any 85 boxes, so it must be from somewhere else.

  • Sorry for the delay... having scanner issues...keeps cutting off one border, no matter how many cards I place on the scanner & now the scans aren't coming out clear. Plus my son came home w/ his report card and we need to run out and celebrate (All A & B+s!!)image
  • Pack 4 includes a Ripken, the centering is about the same as the others. Centering has been off left to right, mostly on the right side of the card.

Colebear- who did you buy the box from? The guy I bought this one from has been selling a bunch of racks and wax lately. I just found this guy a few weeks ago and thought I'd give him a shot since Steve didn't have 85 OPC listed.
Here's the 2nd part of pack 3 and another failed attempt to show the cards that had borders cut off in the last scan.

    image
  • GregM- I've opened up 8 packs and no Billy Bucks as of yet. Here's the another attempt at Sandberg & the few highlights of packs 4-8.
Figures the Puckett is very oc.

typical OPC centering huh? I dont see any red sox?????
  • If you bought it off ebay from a guy in Canada, "ofa" or something, then it came from the same case as mine.
And all the cards were tilted like that left to right. Beware that case, folks.

  • No these were purchased off Ebay from a seller that goes by "nightowl999". Super fast shipping, mediocre packaging and 1 questionable pack that I'll scan later...Paul Molitor was the 3rd card in and wax stained...LOL.
8 packs opened, 5 still to scan before I go back "live".... here's hoping that the 85 collation isn't great and there's another Puckett in the remaining packs.

I won one box of the 86's. I put a snipe in on the 84's but they went for about 6 bucks higher than my snipes. I didnt bid on the 91s because of such a slim chance for Chipper rookies.

I agree that the 82 box went high. I am beginning to think that people believe there are Ripken rookies in those. There really isnt anything special in there.

And I was the winner of one of the 1990 Fleer Canadian boxes. I would have bid on the other but let it go. People don't realize just how rare 90 Fleer Canadian is. There is a guy who has a box for 48 buy it now on ebay but he wants 20 shipping and wont budge on the overall price. Paying 68 is just too much.

Nice rip so far Yankeeefan! I never realized that 85 OPC had such centering problems though.

I know the Fleer Canadians are rare, I just never thought they went that high. 91 is a great year because the cards look like the Tiffany without the gloss, and there aren't that many graded. It's not a super condition-sensitive set like anything pre-90, and PSA 9 Chippers go for $30, while PSA 10s of stars do well also. I just listed a PSA 10 '91 Puckett in my store and it sold in less than 10 minutes at $40. Looks like the Canadian market is heating up.

Well, the Canadian dollar is nearly the same as an American dollar these days! image

But seriously, yeah, Canadian stuff is heating up. I just want to finish my 77-93 Sets and get the heck out before I get too frustrated trying to find the stuff at a reasonable price.
  • Yankeefan, I'd be interested in the Ryan. PM me if it's available.

  • Okay, I'm back and hopefully we can get caught up...I'm itchin to open the rest of these..

Pack #4. The 10th card is the Ripken that was already scanned.

    image
  • And here's Pack 5. the 10th card in this pack was the previously scanned Ryan. By the way, the poster in both packs was Damaso Garcia.

    image
  • Pack 6, the Yount card has a dinged corner and the ding on the back of the last card in the pack. The 10th card is Steve Rogers/poster Dan Driessan. I'll get the Rogers in another scan somewhere down the road.

    image
  • Pack 7... The o/c Puckett that was scanned earlier is the 10th card from this pack, Willie Upshaw is the poster
    Let's try that again..

    image
  • Pack 8. The 10th card is Gary Redus/poster is Doyle Alexander

    image
  • Back to the ripping... Pack 9- a diamond cut Seaver. Card 10 is a very buzzed looking Gary Templeton and the poster is David Palmer

    image
  • Pack 10. 10th card is Buddy Bell (back ding)/poster is Dave Stieb

    image
  • Pack 11. Another pack w/ nothing special. 10th card is Rollie Fingers. Fingers didn't have the usual ding on the back, but more wax on the front than many of the other top cards. poster-HubieBrooks

    image
  • Pack 12. Gwynn was the top card, upside down in the pack and the usual ding on the top card is on the fron. Moseby also has a ding. 10th card is Rick Honeycutt/poster-Bill Caudill

    image
  • Pack 13. Bob Knepper is the top card...o/c and some front wax, but no ding on the back. Willie Upshaw is the poster.

    image
  • Pack 14. The drought continues... Alejandro Pena is the 10th card, light wax/no back ding. Driessen is the poster

    image
  • These are the "10th cards" that haven't been scanned. Most have a ding on the back of the card.

    image
  • Pack 15. More of nothing special...oc Henderson, decent Sutton and Tony perez cards. Jim Clancy is the 10th card-very little wax and no ding/Dave Palmer is the poster

    image
  • Pack 16. Weird pack... one card had a slight bow in it, the next was pefectly flat, then slight bow, then flat. Julio cruz is card #10 and had no wax on the front.no ding on the back. The pack also had a some tear in the inner flap. Oh, well...

    image

Looking at the scan I noticed slight bleeding on the Remy card, aroung the RedSox. Looking closer it has wax on the front, which is weird because the card was in the middle of the pack.
  • Poster from the previous pack was Steve Rogers.
Pack 17. Nothing special again. Steve Bedrosian is the 10th card- oc top/bottom and wax, no ding. Youngblood card has the ding on the back that's been found on the top card in the pack (it wasn't) Poster is Jeff Reardon.

    image
  • Pack 18. Alan Wiggins is the 10th card and was turned upside down in pack. A small piece of the pack ripped off when I opened the pack. Lloyd Moseby-poster.

    image
  • Pack 19. Finally another HOFer. Of course the Winfield card isn't close to centered. craig Lefferts is the 10th card- wax stain/no ding. Gary Lavelle-poster.

I think we see a pattern here, unfortunately.

  • << <i>I think we see a pattern here, unfortunately. >>

Yeah, not much worth grading, except maybe some commons if you're building a registry set. I think the Ryan may be sent in on the June special. I'll give the rest to my boys or wheel-n-deal with board members who see something they need.
Still, it's a blast to rip a box of 20+ year old cards.

Here's pack 20. 2 more HOFers= Niekro w/centering issues and Joe Morgan with the same. Singleton has a dinger upper right corner and the 10th card is Tanana- wax. poster-Mike Fitzgerald.

    image
  • Pack 21. A bit better, 2 more HOFers...Carlton w/centering problems, but the Carew doesn't look bad despite the centering. Strawberry was the top card- oc, wax and front ding. Oglivie also has a bit of wax, despite being a mid-pack card. Willie Upshaw-poster.

    image
  • Pack 22. Top card is Dave Concepcion-wax. Sutcliffe has a ding on the back that's been common with cards on top of a pack. Charlie Lea poster.

    image
  • Pack 23- Steve Kemp is the top card-wax. Poster of Fitzgerald.

    image
  • Pack 24. Trammell w/centering. Mike Scott is top card-wax, ding. Andre Dawson poster.

    image
  • Pack 25- Neil Allen top card-usual issues. Andre Dawson card has slight ding bottom border. Buck Martinez poster.image
  • Pack 26. Molitor card has a major wax stain, tho it wasn't the top card. Top card is Tom Herr-wax, no ding. Eddie Murray w/ centering probs. Stieb poster.

    image
  • Pack 27. Bruce Benedict top card-ding &wax. A young Gooden, a couple big bats in Kong and the BabyBull and a centering issue on Billy Bucks... Andre Dawson poster.

    image
  • A card from pack 26 and one from the next pack. I'll rip the rest tomorrow, hopefully there's a well-centered HOF card or 3 still in the box.

I was going to buy a box of this and rip too...but after seeing the centering I may or may not pass. Guess I would have to take 4 or 5 random packs and see how the centering is running.
  • More of the same in the remaining packs. Picked up a Mattingly and Brett. Many of the cards with the same centering issues...anywhere from approx 80-20 to 60-40 centering. The better the side-side became, the top-bottom got a bit worse.
It was fun ripping a box over 20 years old. I had stopped collecting during the 80s, so this was a fun rip. I'll be heading out to a card store this week to pick up a binder and sheets and the boys will have something to keep them busy for a few days.
If anyone is building this set and needs cards, LMK and I'll send a scan of what I have. Maybe you can help the boys get closer to a complete set.
