Auction lot viewing at State of Michigan sale of coins from abandoned safe deposit boxes
Not exactly a Stack's or Heritage auction experience but it was OK and what I expected.
Located in an old warehouse/workshop it was nice and cool inside with the big door open and a nice breeze. A computer printout of the auction cost $1.00 (which is fair, I'm sure they that is only covering printing costs). They had a very long counter with the coins in plastic bags behind glass and you tell the clerk the lot number you are interested in, no chairs to sit on while viewing was not so great as nearly every lot had multiple coins
being sold (example: most of the silver dollars had at least 8-10 coins per lot, some more). Some of the coinss would probably do better
if they were not combined with others, here is an example - Half dollars: 1859-O,1877,1902, 1923 Monroe Doctrine, two 1893 Columbian
Expo, 8 walking liberties, Washington-Carver and Booker T. Washington all in one lot.
This auction was not put together by someone with a numismatic background I am sure.
Grades not given on most of the coins, you look and decide for yourself what you feel they grade and are worth.
One bulk lot of Lincoln cents had a 1944-D Lincoln that they said in the printout someone had tried to turn into a 1914-D, that would
be an interesting study item to get.
I recognized a couple of local dealers looking over the coins and I expect many will be bought and recycled on Ebay fairly soon.
I will be back for the start of the auction tomorrow morning, I have my eye on a few things to go for.

I am surprised scammers have not tried to sell with user ids that sound like state auctions such as "Connecticut Unclaimed Freight"
<< <i>The state of Mass is having auction viewing for unclaimed property that they will be selling on Ebay. It is only 40 miles from me, but I will not even bother, because the states that auction on Ebay always get very stupid money for coins (like $400 for baggy 84-CC GSAs).

No online bidding for the Michigan auction, this is in person only. I think Michigan is behind the times on getting the best price.
keep track of sales price in case person or inheritor is found - to pay them off
that explains the odd lots - what was found in the box
I just got my latest CoinWorld and there was an advertisement for it
I went to the website listed and they have 2 more this year - do they have 3-4 per year?
<< <i>did you bid on anything?

The one last Saturday was the first they have had in about 3-4 years. Are you sure that the other 2 were for coins and
not something else?
state of Michigan surplus every couple months
so what did you get?
