SMS Birthmark Kennedy question for Russ

Most of us know that the Birthmark Kennedy die produced some outstanding coins in 1967 as per your pictures in your Registry set.

Have you ever found a birthmark Kennedy that did not have a designation of CAM/DCAM?

I guess it would be sort of a progressive deterioration of the die as it produced more coins.

Would the Birthmark still be visible in the later Half dollars that were struck with this particular die?

I always thought the devices would have to be at least cameo to show the dot head.

Yes. I found one in a set and, since it hadn't been graded, it was not designated cameo or deep cameo. image

A completely brilliant example would probably be undetectable. I say "probably" because there are two additional die markers on the coin, and I don't know if they would still be visible or not. As Fivecents noted, the main die marker would disappear. There are also probably examples with light contrast that wouldn't be enough for the designation, but would still show the birthmark.

So far, though, all the examples I've found have been strong enough for at least cameo.

Having not seen one in hand, what would the other two markers be or is that top secret? image
  • Thanks for the help and the image. I find the SMS series fascinating and a challenge.

Maybe one day one will slip by you and wind up in my mailbox. image

One slipped by me on Teletrade recently because it went for money so stupid even I wasn't willing to pony up.

Thanks for the image, Russ. I hadn't noticed that as a distinguishing feature.
