I have just received the following from candidate Joe Bolling. It is very well thought out. I will vote for many of his suggested candidates, but not all.
Dear friends in numismatics,
Many of you know that I am running for office as a governor of the American Numismatic Association for the term 2007-2009. I took this step reluctantly, since I have long wanted to increase the time I spend playing with my hobby rather than the time I spend working for organizations. However, I am convinced that the ANA has, over the past four years, moved in a direction that ignores the rank and file membership, and jeopardizes both the ANA's financial stability and it's attractiveness to hobbyists.
Others share my opinions, and several of them are also running for governor.
I don't actually know how many of you are ANA members (thus voters), so for some of you this message has little significance. But if you are not an ANA member, yet do interact regularly with other collectors, please pass the contents of this message to your friends.
The ballots for this election are now in the mail. They must be voted and returned to the auditing firm that is running the election by 19 July. Do not return a ballot to ANA HQ - it will be disqualified.
The candidates for president and vice president are running uncontested (Barry Stuppler and Patti Finner). I consider them to both be members of the group that has brought us the problems that I refer to above. In order to make substantive changes, the reform group must have five votes on the board.
I am recommending the following core group of candidates for governor: Krause, Mishler, Rochette, Boling, Stearns, Ostromecki. Then pick a favorite son from Eshbach or Tumonis.
Use all seven of your votes - the "bullet ballot" does not apply this year, because we want to get a solid mass of candidates elected, not a single individual. Do not vote for more than seven governors.
Wendell Wolka has declared as an independent candidate, but he allowed Barry Stuppler to include his campaign positions and name in Stuppler's recently-distributed advertising. I believe this has compromised Wendell's electability, so I am not recommending that votes be cast for him. If he does get elected, I will be pleased to serve with him.
If you have any questions about these recommendations, please contact me. Of course, you are free to vote for whomever you want to see in office.
Be careful how you mark your ballot - each voter must transcribe a membership number from the envelope to the ballot. To reduce the number of ballots that are disqualified, take care to use the member number format that appears on the envelope, rather than the format you may have been using for years.
I will appreciate your support, and thank you for reading this far.
Joe

I found Boling's email interesting. Is it normal for a candidate to suggest other candidates that you should vote for? Should Boling refer to the reccomended block of candidates as the "reform" group? Should Boling explicitly state that Stuppler is a source of the current problems, assuming that Boling might be elected and might need to work with Stuppler for the next two years?
If you note in my opening thread, Boling has not received my endorsement, and I will not be voting for him. Given the email that was posted, I believe I made the correct choice.

Longacre, I had planned to vote for Joe Boling, but after reading his letter from Julian's posting, I am having second thoughts about him. Unlike Mr. Boling, I will not push any form of block voting as that has caused nothing but problems (mixing good decent candidates with bad ones).

Bullet voting is only voting for one candidate and leaving the rest empty.
Boling is suggesting candidates that he feel will work for the ANA's benefit and feels that there needs to be five elected from this new group of candidates.
The bottom line is to VOTE as soon as you get your ballot.
I have not received Saturday or today's mail, but so far no ballot.

Re Bolling's letter: I have been a member of the ANA since the early 1990s. I only recall one other election when there were "parties" formed, that is, groups of candidates running together. (I believe it was circa 2002 or so; there might have been other times, but I simply donot recall them.) Frankly I was displeased by that happening. I'd rather have many independent candidates each ready, willing, and able to support policies he or she thinks suitable. That said, I do not find Bolling's letter to be as objectionable as Stuppler's literature. Stuppler is running UNOPPOSED. He has no real reason for pushing a group of candidates other than the idea that they more or less automatically will support the policies he supports. Even setting side the fact that I am not wildly in favor of Stuppler's policies, that's still not the outcome I want; I want a more independent group. Plus 1) I did not like the fact that Stuppler's literature appeared on the NGC website; I think a President-to-be needs to be more neutral between top grading services, and 2) everyone Stuppler endorsed had some comment in the literature, which makes it appear as if this is almost an actual party of candidates.
One other comment re Wolka: After appearing to make one post, he seems to have again vanished from these boards. I must admit that this fact does not endear him to me. He could have--and I believe should have--stuck around to post more of his thoughts. Yeah, there are perhaps less than 100 voting ANA members who post and/or lurk on these boards, but it's still an option for him to help promulgate his ideas, an option he apparently did not wish to take advantage of. I do hope he returns and posts more before I send in my ballot...assuming I get one...

Now that you mention it, back in 1999 there was such a party called the "Real Coalition" with Will Rossman as the presidential candidate and it included Patti Finner. Rossman ran against Robert Campbell of Utah, and of course, Campbell won. I raised cain big time about the "Real Coalition" and referred to them as the "Real Bad Joke" and the "Bad Coalition" because of those running.

You are indeed correct about the people involved but might it have been the 2002 election? I know that the point of forming a party caused me to vote against Will Rossman. After he lost in 2002 (I think), Will posted here congratulating the winner. I thought that was a classy act.
By the way, two sets of ballots (my son is an ANA member) arrived at my household today!!!

The Real Coalition was in the 1999 ANA election, yet Will Rossman ran for President against Bob Campbell in 1999, John Wilson in 2001, and William Horton in 2005 - all three times he lost. And Patti (Jaegar) Finner - she ran against Gary Lewis in 2003 and got defeated big time despite having full page ads (which should tell her that having a very abrasive personality will hurt you at the end).

I hadn't realized that Will ran for President 3 times. That's surely an unenviable record of futility... He's still about the only other ANA candidate (aside from you, Michael) to post here at least semi-frequently.
Just got back from a week's vacation in Los Angeles and Las Vegas with my wife. I checked my huge stack of mail. NO ANA BALLOT thru Thursday. I started to read a couple of the ANA threads since I left. Interesting. I will comment more after some sleep. Steve
Sorry for not posting more often; we just returned from our honeymoon and I am getting ready to leave to teach at Summer Seminar tomorrow morning so things are a little hectic. Clearly, sides are forming for this election. As an independent, I am still trying to stay focused on supporting or not supporting issues rather than sides. Finding approaches to the largest opportunities which ANA faces (sound fiscal policy; reestablishing good communication with the Association's members; enhancing educational initiatives that can involve and appeal to members such as exhibiting) sometimes creates strange bedfellows. However I make no apology for supporting things in which I believe
As I stated before, neither "side" has an exclusive on good ideas. The Board will need people who can successfully "work both sides of the aisle" in order to get things done. I believe I can make that happen for you and solicit your support if you agree. In any case, vote!

Well, Mr. Wolka, with your contribution to Barry Stuppler's "Help Set The ANA's Agenda" letter, I am curious as to whether you are really an Independent as you claim. What exactly have you achieved in another organization which you hold a board seat in, Central States Numismatic Society, besides providing assistance with the Central States website?

Wendell, congratulations on your wedding and I wish you years of bliss with God's blessings.
I won't, however, be voting for you. Two posts, at election time, are a bit "Johnny come lately" for me. There are other candidates whose views, I believe, are closer to my own and in whose independence, personally, I feel more comfortable.
If you win, congratulations and I hope you will do a good job with independent thought. If you do not win, I hope you will become a regular here in order than many, like myself, may get to know you better, should you run in the future.
If you and WW are both elected, I hope you never need his vote as the deciding vote on one of your proposals. I think some thoughts are best left unsaid (or else posted by an alt )

I understand that, Mark. Understand this - if someone says that he is an "Independent" yet contributed his thoughts, along those of the current regime and their allies (AKA pro-regime candidates), in a letter produced by a member of the current regime, would you or anyone else wonder if that person is "talking out of both sides of his mouth"? Maybe I'm wrong, but I sense that such a person could be prone to doing a "U-Turn" or a "flip-flop".

I don't remember who's campaign ad I read in the Coin World, but it was one of the incumbents whom I will definitely not be voting for, and in that ad this person endorsed Wendell Wolka. Sorry Mr. Wolka, but you will not get my vote because of your association with the outgoing (hopefully) old boy's club.
Well Michael, I serve on Central States' education committee and we have been rolling out educational seminars across the midwest. We had a two day seminar in Iowa and just had a one day seminar in Indianapolis. We are planning additional programs to get education out to members where they live.
On a broader front, I was the co-founder and first President of the Ohio State Numismatic Association as well as the organization's Annual Show Treasurer. I have also served as President, Vice President, Governor, Librarian and as a number of different committee chairs for the Society of Paper Money Collectors for nearly thirty years. I serve as ANA's Exhibit Committee Chair (the hat I was wearing when I responded to Barry Stuppler's request for input) and have been directing the Commitee's efforts to look at the present set up of exhibit categories.
I think I can safely say that I am not afraid to work for the betterment of the hobby where I can.
When Mr. Stuppler asked for your input, did you realize that it was to be used in his "campaign literature?" Incidentally, I do not think this question has a "correct" answer; I am asking because I'd like to know.
I'm reposting this post (mine) from another thread:
I will add my support to the above comments about Carl Schwenker who I know personally. Carl has done a great job with the Houston show and as a retired corporate executive does seem to understand what is needed to run a more businesslike organization. Carl was appointed as a member (perhaps even chair, I don't recall exactly) of the ANA finance committe a couple of years back and resigned when it became clear the expectation was for the committee to sit around and do little rather than overhaul the organization's finances as Carl wanted to do when he accepted the appointment. He spent the time needed to understand the organization's finances and came up with the proposals to start changing things but had all of his suggestions tabled and postponed. I understand from Carl that he and Barry don't see eye to eye on everything but Barry knows Carl and respects his background and experience. The ANA board is structured to be very weak. It will be important to have board members who can convince the President and Executive Director to make change. IMHO Carl is the perfect blend of "tact" and "bulldog" to get things done. When he grabs onto an issue, he doesn't let it go but yet approaches others in a positive way so that they are not immediately turned off. I also know that as a busy person there's no way he'd waste his time running for the position if he didn't plan on giving it a lot of his energy (which does seem amazing boundless). In his case, being an ANA governor is about improving the hobby he enjoys and not about building name recognition for his coin business (he's not a dealer) or padding his resume for some greater agenda.
<< <i>As I stated in other threads, I will vote for:
1. Cliff Mishler 2. Chet Krause 3. Ed Rochette 4. Joe Boling 5. Tony Tumonis 6. Walt Ostromecki
After reading additional comments here and rereading his write-up, I have added Carl Schwenker to my list for the seventh vote, which already included Mike Doran and Radford Stearns. I will be away for a week starting tomorrow so I hope to have my ballot when I return. I will let you all know my final choice at that time. Steve >>
The time has come. I received my ballot today. In the 22 years that I have been a member of ANA, this is the first time I have REALLY examined the choices carefully. Early on, I determined NOT to vote for President and Vice President (for the first time) or for the three incumbents and Mr. Fitts whom I consider an incumbent from a prior board. In other threads I mentioned why I voted for each of the six named people above. I later eliminated Mr. Stearns and so my seventh vote was between Carl Schwenker and Mike Doran. I like a lot of the credentials Carl has and I believe he can do much for the ANA if he wins. But in the end, I have decided to support Mike Doran with my seventh vote. I recognize he can turn people off including me, sometimes. I realize his decision to launch a coin board web site in the middle of the election was probably wrong. I realize his chances of winning a seat on the board is a long shot at best, BUT, he had the guts to run for the board. He has the guts to participate on this forum. We pretty much know where he stands on the issues and that is probably better than voting for some of the others.
I truly believe that if Cliff, Chet and Ed get elected, the membership will get back their control of the organization. If two of my other four choices also prevail, then a new majority will also benefit the organization. However, if three of the four incumbent governors win, then I believe the President and Vice President will take that to mean that the membership is satisfied with the current situation including the vast majority of the proposed bylaw changes.
The above is, of course, my opinions, but I do hope my thinking is shared by most voters. Steve

Thank you, Steve. The coin board has nothing to do with the ANA election. In fact, I keep hearing of CU (and NGC) board members getting removed for one reason or another. I am offering a place for them to speak their mind without the fear of getting booted. There are things I would like to say but I do not want to get booted either. If I get elected, I will have to limit my activities due to the infamous confidentiality agreement .

I do hope he returns and posts more before I send in my ballot...assuming I get one...
<< <i>No ballot in Florida...sigh.
Now that you mention it, back in 1999 there was such a party called the "Real Coalition" with Will Rossman as the presidential candidate and it included Patti Finner.

I can sell you one of mine.
Dibs!
I hadn't realized that Will ran for President 3 times. That's surely an unenviable record of futility... He's still about the only other ANA candidate (aside from you, Michael) to post here at least semi-frequently.

As I stated before, neither "side" has an exclusive on good ideas. The Board will need people who can successfully "work both sides of the aisle" in order to get things done. I believe I can make that happen for you and solicit your support if you agree. In any case, vote!

<< <i>Sorry for not posting more often; we just returned from our honeymoon and I am getting ready to leave to teach at Summer Seminar tomorrow morning so things are a little hectic.

I won't, however, be voting for you. Two posts, at election time, are a bit "Johnny come lately" for me. There are other candidates whose views, I believe, are closer to my own and in whose independence, personally, I feel more comfortable.
If you win, congratulations and I hope you will do a good job with independent thought. If you do not win, I hope you will become a regular here in order than many, like myself, may get to know you better, should you run in the future.
If you and WW are both elected, I hope you never need his vote as the deciding vote on one of your proposals. I think some thoughts are best left unsaid (or else posted by an alt

Thanks much in advance.

After reading additional comments here and rereading his write-up, I have added Carl Schwenker to my list for the seventh vote, which already included Mike Doran and Radford Stearns. I will be away for a week starting tomorrow so I hope to have my ballot when I return. I will let you all know my final choice at that time.
Steve
