If someone took five slabbed MS66s, five slabbed MS65s, and five nice raw gem uncs, how well do you think you could tell the slabbed 66s from the rest, and are you willing to pay a couple of orders of magnitudes more just because some slabbing company says they are ever so imperceptibly better than some other coins, and the slab population is basically merely limited by how many have been submitted?

I'd like to talk you down, but I can't. That seller is a great guy who finds and submits his own, and only sends the coins in once even if they get undergraded the first time.

Looks like a mushy strike, i think you can resist....
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

He's probably buying it for a registry set, in which case the one point difference is important. And yes, there is a rather notable difference between an MS65 and MS66 when it comes to Lincolns

Thanks guys. I think I am over it.

You guesed it, and I would buy nothing under 66. But I almost always with everything by just bidding PCGS prices. This is insane.

    how about this reason....

    "Circulation strikes: 317,570,000!"

It may be a tough date, but there has to be comparable MS66s that won't be as much money....is THIS one really worth paying that much for?

The PCGS price guide is significantly too low on this one.

The 1946 through about 1953 Philly Lincolns in red 66 and higher are not easy... there is a sticker shock associated with these...

Don't be hasty. I'd wait for another one at a price less dear.

I would wait. Don't make the plastic the be-all-end-all of your quest. Take some time at a show and cherrypick thru the raw coins. Lotsa dealers have binders full of nice looking 34-58 wheats in 2x2s. You might find one that's just as nice for $10 or so.

Well, looks like my advise is too late...unless there is an ebay bidder with your call sign. image

Russ made me do it! Seriously, a big shout out to Russ. He PM'ed me with the research that said all 279 known ones were accounted for in registry sets. After that I could care less and would pay moon money!!! Man, I got it bad. I will be changing my handle to "Lost to Lincolns"

Actually, I said that all 279 were tied up in the world series of trading. The premise being that a sure way to tell if the PCGS price guide is low is to see what's being bought up in the contest.

Well I was going to advise that you wait be I see that you bought itimage. The only red flag for me is the overexposed pics, way to bright and makes me think hes hiding something. As a Lincoln collector myself I know just how tough this coin is to find nice and I hope this one is what your looking for.

That is good to hear. I have avoided his auctions in the past due to the overexposed images. I might have to look at a few more closely in the future.

I've bid on his offerings a few times, don't think I ever bid high enough to win though. It appears he has his devotees.

Or that there exists one person (and quite possibly just one) that thinks that. Or even merely that one person hopes that PCGS will raise their price guide on the basis of the last couple of ebay sales and "purchased" the virtual coins between the sales and the price guide raising.

I wouldn't think so, but others apparently disagree.

Good thread. good advice from Russ and VTcoins. glad to see you made a good decision--definition: one you're happy with. I like to see a happy new owner and when you want something bad it's very nice to get it. --Jerry

Wow, didn't think this coin would bring that much!

Congratulations PCC, at least you can cross this one off of your list
