what is the most money you ever paid for a raw classic coin?
I think it was for maybe $1500. It was a darkside coin.

In that case, $600 for a 1909-S VDB Lincoln.

If you look at today's valuations, the most valuable coin I own which I bought raw is worth about $500 (EF-40 1872 IHC).
And the most valuable raw coin I own is my 1877 IHC, but I bought it slabbed and cracked it out for my album.

Nope. I sold them both raw no reserve and sweated bullets hoping I didn't screw myself on the purchase prices. Both were problem coins, and I went with nothing but gut feeling on values.

Keep in mind $25,000 (or $250,000) is less to some people than what $500 is to others.
$35K for a Chain Cent.

yes, but when I say faith I mean faith in one's grading ability of the coin. At much higher prices paid for raw coins that comes sharply into focus.

Knowing you are predominantly a gold collector I bet you got some advice on that chain cent. Advice is good! Still takes faith in your grading abilty to put out 15k for a raw coin.

from the guy who bought the chain cent. he did me a favor
basically and pitied me with a nice coin.
and $860 for this:
These are the highest I have paid for a raw coin...
More recently (5 yrs ago) about $200 for a 27-S Lincoln that I really should have known better than to think was an original 64RD -- another lesson learned, not sure yet how much that one will cost me.
Since then I've been more careful, a few months ago I paid about $80 each for a couple of raw Lincolns that I am confident are solid originl gems and well worth the price. Much more than that and I'd be a bit leery of buying raw coins these days.
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!

1803 Large Cent
Actually the most expensive I've ever bought.
<< <i>four something ....
Hmmm...you mean like:
a. $4.65
b. $465
c. $4231
d. $432,789
???

On that particular auction coin I was willing to pay $14,000.
Since then, the most I've paid raw was in 2002. That was $17,250 for a gem 1818/5 bust quarter.
Most I've ever spent on a raw darkside coin is $12.
The opportunities to buy nice and expensive raw coins is getting weaker each year.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Wow! Worth it I suspect. But...wow.
I'm guessing the most I've ever paid for a raw coin is about fifty bucks. When I was a kid I collected raw - had to because PCGS and NGC didn't exist. Since I resumed collecting as an adult, I have bought, and will only buy certified coins.
