How much do the safe deposit box cost in your area?

orevilleoreville Posts: 12,145 ✭✭✭✭✭
It dawned on me that i really have no idea how much safe deposits cost in various regions of the country.

In my area alone which is in the Hudson Valley region of New York (between New York City and Albany, NY) the following price ranges were found for the larger sized boxes:

10" (high) x10" (wide) box = ranges from $95 to $225 plus sales tax
5 x 10 box = ranges from $65 to $200 plus sales tax
5 x 5 box = ranges from $40 to $95 plus sales tax (note that NYState imposes SALES tax on safe deposit boxes!!!)

All of them are pretty much the same in length.

I could not believe how much prices varied in my area alone!!!!

Generally mutual savings bank (which are rapidly vanishing) are on the low end and commercial banks are on the high end.

Credit Unions never seem to have safe deposit boxes!!

Your findings and comments are appreciated!!!

  • I called the bank that I do business with a few weeks ago to inquire. The only size they had left available was 5 X 5 and they wanted $60.

There's 2 sizes at my bank. The smaller one is $20 a year, the big box is $50 a year.
I've had my safe deposit boxes for 41 years now. Man I could have bought a nice big safe for that much money.

My bank gives, yes gives me a 5x10 for free. But they haven't had one available since I
joined them! Oh, and they humidify their vault to keep documents from crumbling (I live
in Vegas and boy it's dry here).
Free is good but I don't want one anyway!

  • 9x18 for $80. I'm not sure about the size but I can fit 5 PCGS boxes on their sides with room to spare but can't fit the 6'th box. I was on the waiting list for 5 years before one became available.

I have a 10x10 which normally runs $100 per year, but the next year is FREE since they moved banks (built a new bank), and disrupted my life....image

So, the next year is free, baby.

10 x 10 costs $130 per year in Naples, Florida at Bank of America.

I use to have six boxes until I consolidated a few things... now,
    I'm down to three.

My end goal is to have one smaller box housing a more
concise collection..." a la 'Box of Twenty'..."

I have all I can manage sliding a 10 x 10 out and onto the table. It holds 16 silver NGC boxes flat, or about18 PCGS boxes on end. Cost is $125 each per year.

Bank of America here is 50.00 for 5x10, but free for meeting minimum account req. If you need a larger size, they will give you a credit of 50.oo towards one of the larger boxes also. They have several different sizes, and I dont know what they are as i moved my box to another bank that gives a larger box free with min account specs.

Exactly the same in the Chicago area. Massive price differences. Also, massive availability and access differences.

My credit union offers 5x10's for $35-$40 depending on the branch.

But availability is very tight. I have been on a waiting list for a 10x10 for over 5 years.

None of you are obviously from the Chicago area. I'm well past that age, have a substantial account in several banks and I can't even get a free pen from them. Have 5 safe deposit boxes in 5 different places and if I wanted to write something down and asked for a piece of paper, they look at me as if they wanted me to pay for that too. Actually at all of them there is a waiting list for boxes. I'm only suprized they don't charge to park in thier lots. Being a frequent visitor to hospitals I've noticed that the majority charge to park in thier lots so why not banks next. Just in case your curious, Weiss Hospital charges the most at $6 to park. University of Chicago Hospitals charges by the hour.

My credit union has safe deposit boxes, but only at one branch office I have a 5x5 and I am on the waiting list for a 10x10 those have been rented since the day they opened and only one 10x10 has ever been vacated!

  • StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a free 5x5 because my home loan is through my bank. Here are the rates otherwise though. This is our local Savings & Loan. There are only 2 banks in my village of 8000 people, so choices are limited.

Price and Price with tax (I'm in NY too over in the western part)

    3x5 - $32, $34.56
    5x5 - $40, $43.20
    3x10 - $55 - $59.40
    5x10 - $85 - $91.80
    10x10 $140 - $151.20
