BARBER HALVES - Grades back - I'm #7 whoopee!

I just got most of my nicer Barber half dollars graded by pcgs, and it went pretty well, all in all:

Cert# Date Grade
13874643 1892 MS64
13874644 1894-O AU58
13874645 1895 AU55
13874646 1897 AU58
13874647 1898 MS63
13874648 1900-S A.S(BB)
13874649 1902 AU55
13874650 1902-O AU55
13874651 1903 AU50
13874652 1906-D AU55
13874653 1907 A.S. (BB)
13874654 1907-D AU55
13874655 1910-S AU50
13874656 1911 Q.C. - total copout! (another topic)
13874657 1912 MS64
13874658 1912-D MS63

Some good, some not so good, some back in the same plastice they originally came from (all were crack-outs). I have 4 more being graded with my free CC submission, and I have a few at home that are listed in my registry set (#7).
I've also got a few NGC slabbed MS Barbers that I haven't crossed over yet, but I'm planning on getting these liquidated, so if anybody is interested let me know. I know that some were interested in how these would come back - they've been in a Whitman Classic for several years (decades, even). The BB's are nice coins from TPG holders - I get a special kick out the 'questionable color' response (since you can't call it a grade!) - PCGS basically washes their hands of the coin - even though I'm paying for the authoritative decision. The coin has a very dark, dirty (but even) toning, with lots of mint luster underneath the darkness. I don't fool around with any coins' surfaces - I crack 'em, put them into the album, and leave them to themselves! I think that "questionable color" should fall under the altered surfaces category - in the expert opinion that I am paying to get, the coin is either NT or AT - it should not be in question after having been viewed by several sets of trained eyes. I think I will ask for a refund on this non-grade.

If any of you Barber half collectors are interested, please email or PM me, otherwise, I will deal with Heritage - they have always treated me very nice.

Back to the grass-cutting for now!
Chuck

You did pretty well on those MS 64's... I submitted all mine, and all came back slabbed. Sometimes a little luck helps...

Congrats on the submission. I too would resubmit, you never know sometimes though.

I guess only you know if you did well or not on this submission.
I too have been slammed on some of my submissions...especially
    on cross-overs.

Regardless, you've got some mighty nice coins there, I'm sure.

Images would be nice to share... image I know I'd love to see them.

Congrats on getting to # 7 on the Barber Half Date Set.

I now can certainly agree with some of the comments made in the past about an AU58 being an MS62 on any given day. I saved a lot of the original inserts, and I have to get them out & see what the original grades were, and who they were from. For the most part, I think that the coins got knocked down a number or two, but a couple got a nice bump, which really offsets an MS62 going to MS60, or AU58 going to AU55. And I also got a few that I had cracked out in my early collecting years, resubmitted, and bb'd for the ol' altered surfaces back into holders, so that's a good thing.....they were pcgs coins to begin with, in the old green label holders.

All in all, I have no complaints, and I think I just may resubmit those bb'd coins someday, although it looks like there is some interest in nice, raw Barber halves! That may be the path of least resistence in moving the coins to other collectors.

Thanks for your comments - image

I've got 4 more still in the grading room, and a few NGC potential crossovers, so who knows.......image

Actually, the only reason I'm spending the $$ to get them graded is to move them on to other interested collectors, so if I do move up, it won't be for long.

Just an aside - I think I've gathered more general coin knowledge in the time I've focused on the Barber series than any other time in my life. That design, and the time during which they were minted, and their place as a workhorse of commerce (as well as what happened to many of them in later years) combine to speak volumes to the collector who pays close attention.
