Question about Spouse gold coin

I should know this but who is on the Coin for Chester A Arthur's spouse. I know the mint has Alice Paul listed but who is she. She is not his wife. Anybody know?

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it. I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

    Wasn't Alice Paul a leader in the Woman's Sufferage movement? Hope she's better looking than Susan B. image

  • You are correct. But acording to the Mint web site "When a President served without a First Spouse, such as Thomas Jefferson, a gold coin will be issued bearing an obverse image emblematic of Liberty as depicted on a circulating coin of that era, and bearing a reverse image emblematic of themes of that President." This woman was not on any coin in the 1880's she was not even born till after he was out of office. I wonder why the Mint is deviating from the stated information.

    You could always contact the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. They "advise" on US coinage designs.

    They aren't deviating. The use of Alice Paul is written into the text of the law that authorized the coins.

    ‘‘(D) DESIGN IN CASE OF NO FIRST SPOUSE.—In the

    case of any President who served without a spouse—

    ‘‘(i) the image on the obverse of the bullion coin

    corresponding to the $1 coin relating to such President

    shall be an image emblematic of the concept of

    ‘Liberty’—

    ‘‘(I) as represented on a United States coin

    issued during the period of service of such President;

    or

    ‘‘(II) as represented, in the case of President

    Chester Alan Arthur, by a design incorporating

    the name and likeness of Alice Paul, a leading

    strategist in the suffrage movement, who was

    instrumental in gaining women the right to vote

    upon the adoption of the 19th amendment and

    thus the ability to participate in the election of

    future Presidents, and who was born on January

    11, 1885, during the term of President Arthur;

    and

    ‘‘(ii) the reverse of such bullion coin shall be of

    a design representative of themes of such President,

    except that in the case of the bullion coin referred

    to in clause (i)(II) the reverse of such coin shall be

    representative of the suffrage movement.

    I was going to say I thought that was part of the legislation.

    Often people talk about what the mint does, but they are just obeying the law.

  • Thanks for pointing that out to me. I don't know why the people who write this legislation just keep it simple.
