When I see an auction like this, I take the opportunity to educate the seller. This guy even asks for information to be sent to him if he is not correct in his listing. Many times, I'll get a response that is thankful and the listings get changed to reflect the correct description of the coin. Sometimes counterfeit coins are pulled when they come to the attention of the owner, etc.
I get a few idiotic responses from people who really are trying to rip people off, but more often than not, I get a positive and friendly response from the seller.
Does anyone else here attempt to educate sellers or do we just look at their auctions and smirk a little...Just curious???
I will help out a seller that is obviously lost.... but that's about it. I was seriously curious about this particular term, that's why I posted it - not so much to "poke fun".
I wasnt suggesting that you were necessarily poking fun, I just think that it is a great opportunity to educate some folks when they have a listing that is a little "off" :-) Some of them are grateful to have information that is more correct than what they have in their listings.
I just thought it would be interesting to get a feel for whether or not some of us try to pass knowledge along.
From reading the auction and looking at the picture he has a 1980-D cent that has a die chip inside the loop of the 9 and he is saying that someone told him that chip mark was an engravers guide mark.
(A mark used by the engraver for the spacing of other features. Such features can actually be seen on some early coins. A compass would be used to lightly scratch an arc line on the die to be used as a base line for the punching of the letters etc.)
