    Coin collector requests a proof 1899 from the mint. The coin arrives us mail, pony express. Collector stores the coin for years and dies. Coin is found in a safe deposit box. Graded PF69 famliy has some big bucks coming.

    Many of the extremely high grade proof Morgans/Barbers came from the John Story Jenks collection. He hand picked examples directly from the mint and put them away for a very long time .... perfect coins to start and no nonnumismatic mishandling.

    A stunning coin, but should not be labeled a 69, in my opinion.

    If I had a silver Eagle in the same grade, it would be a dog, and labeled 63, perhaps.

    Why are we grading on a curve for age?

    A silver eagle that looked like that would not be graded 63. Sorry.

    I'm guessing that many of those imperfections, especially the ones that look like scratches, are on the holder.

    I believe that coin is graded by NGC and the marks are on the holder. There was another thread about this coin elsewhere with different pics.

    for those of you wondering, those "scratches" on thr cheek are just die polish lines

    I've seen TPG's hammer lower graded MS/PF seated and Barber coins for die polish and die striations. For my tastes, I'd rather not have any mint made lines on the cheek of my PF69 Morgan dollar.

    When first coined, a number of the PF Morgans were PF70 coming off the dies. All one had to do was keep it stored perfectly over the next 100 years to get a PF69 grade on it.

    And for what it's worth I've seen a PF69 seated quarter and a MS69 $5 Liberty....both had some pretty obvious scuffs on the high points.
    While undoubtedly about as fine as they come, I didn't agree with the grades.
