Yahoo Auctions closing

ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,785 ✭✭✭✭

I know a few of you already know this and the rest of you probably don't care, but Yahoo is retiring their auction site. I remember back in the late 1990's when Yahoo and eBay were running neck and neck as the top on-line auction site. I just find it interesting.

Here is the official announcement.

Unfortunately, this is a business model that lends itself to natural monopolies forming.

Last day to list an item June 3rd!

So how many scammers will be loading up Yahoo in the next week knowing it doesn't matter if they get banned image

Yahoo had a good thing going then started charging , this bombed and they went back to free too late.

During this time EBay has just raised thier fees to the moon. After ebay & paypal fees Heritage does not look so bad, I just would not pay to get my own coins.
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

I never found any use for their services, as a buyer or seller. Ebay's fees are still very competitve with a B&M auction operation.

I got a few nice coins from Yahoo Auctions when they were charging a fee to list. When the site went back to free listing, people would just list the same coins over and over.image

I buy and sell on Yahoo! Auctions to an extent. Obviously, there is a lot of junk there - but there is a lot of junk on eBay as well. I have 100% feedback rating on Yahoo! Auctions with over 100 sales and use Yahoo! Auctions as just another place to sell beside eBay. You do need to protect yourself and set reserves or a high enough starting bid, as you won't generate the number of people looking at your auctions as the higher volume eBay does. But some people still use ("used") Yahoo! Auctions and every once in a while I found a good deal - not often, but if you have time to kill, you may get lucky. Still, now with Yahoo! Auctions closing, just another reason for eBay to throw their weight around.

I won't buy on it anymore, as I would be worried about people not delivering since there is no reason to keep your feedback up.

I agree with you. I was burned on a yahoo auction (non coin related) and never went back. Luckily my cc company stepped in and covered my fraud related loss.

Yes, I picked up an off center steel cent for something like $9.00 and it's in mint condition. I was quite happy.

Sniping is half the fun. Yahoo never seemed to understand this attraction.

    Chris-

Yeah-it's too bad that they didn't take better care of their auction site. One problem with the site is that there were too many coins listed over and over again-mostly junk. I cherried a number of doubled dies from yahoo-including an XF 1937 DDO 1-O-I quarter. If ebay EVER needed competition, it's NOW!! Nothing to fear from YAHOO anymore. At one time I thought they'd really give the Bay a run for their money.
