Unopened 20th Anniversary Silver Eagles

I have one set of the 20th Anniversary American Silver Eagles still unopened in the mint shipping box. I originally bough this set with the intent on holding it, unopened, and sell for a big profit.

I looked on Ebay the other day and saw some selling for $650-700, then I saw this one, sell for $900!

I want to sell it and take the cash, but I don't want to see them in 6 months to a year for double what I can get today. Any suggestions or more predictions?

  • If you do a search, you'll find a great number of predictions in other threads over the last week. FWIW, mine is $1000-1200.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

    You do. Welcome.

I also have a set graded PCGS 69s, plus an extra ms69 W. Those 4 are for my small personal collection. The unopened box was one of my rare predictions on an investment. I wish I had been able to afford to buy 10 set shipped individually!

I've been fighting off the 2 voices in my head. One saying: my luck is the price will drop way down, so sell now and be happy I predicted good profit potential. And the other says as soon as I sell the price of them will triple!

While the sealed sets look like they will keep going up in price for a while, I get antsy keeping them in the cardboard long term for fear of unseen milk-spotting.
I would hate to sell a sealed box later only to find out the buyer decides to open it and the coin(s) have developed spotting, toning, etc.

I feel much better sending them off for grading and vacuum sealing them as soon as I get them back.

I also considered doing that. How much would it cost to have them graded by PCGS? I don't think it would be worth me paying for a membership just to get 3 coins graded. Plus my luck would be I would get 68s back for all of them.

Would you accept a return on a sealed box that had been opened? Seems like most auctions i've seen do not. What if a buyer opened it and switched the coins with spotted ones? There's no way of knowing.

I have the same concern about selling raw sets. It would be very easy for someone to remove MS69's and replace them with spotted up junk then return the set.

Thats the risk the buyer takes when he buys sight unseen. The spotting problem is well known so the seller should state in no uncertain terms that returns will not be accepted. Makes you wonder just how much upside is left in these things.

P.S. I believe these things have upside potential still, but remember this: very few get out at the top of the market. The top may be here already or it may be here in six months. My advice would be to sell once you are happy with the price (in other words, are you pleased with a 600% return? Then sell).

Simple, sell it then just don't ever check back!

  • I think I'm going to sell the unopened set. I was going to put it on Ebay, but I started to figure what the fees were going to be! It's going to cost about $60-90 to sell it on Ebay. What price do you think I would be able to get for it if I list it here?

    Thanks for all the tips.

If you are going to sell, don't offer a return policy, milk spotting is a problem.

Yep, that's true. But see what reaction you get when you say that to someone who sold Microsoft stock for a 50% profit 15 - 20 years ago!!

there is a 2 set sealed box on ebay at over $1500 right now...how many legit sealed boxes are still out there?
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,789 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, we'll see what the market does in the next week or so, for these. My mom is sending her single unopened set up to me to sell for her.
She paid $100 and if they can get the $900+ that some of these have hit, she will be very happy

  • How much will ebay and paypal get if it sells for 900$? I have a sealed box of 2 I'm thinking of selling, and have never sold on the bay. Just wondering?
  • ddinkddink Posts: 2,748
Total fees come to around 6%, so about $50-$60 total on eBay & PayPal fees.

Between 50 and 60 bucks per set. There is a site you can use to calculate this (here). If you've not ever sold on ebay you might consider consigning the sets to someone on the board who has a good track record in ebay sales. The reason I suggest this is that if you show up on ebay with a couple of $1000 items for sale and zero feedback - that might well suppress the bidding and the final auction yield. Just a thought. here

  • I thought of the consignment route also. I've noticed before someone offering consignments on the BST, but can't remember who it was now. What does this consist of? Do I send the consignor the box, or do I ship directly to the winner? Anyone with details? I have a friend at work who sells on ebay, but he's never sold coins. I only have a FB rating of 27, but it's 100%. I've bought 2 items off the bay this year, prior to that was nearly a year ago, so I guess that may look suspicious to some, with some of the stuff i've read here.

Actually, with a 27 FB (@100%) I would not hesitate to do the listings myself were I in your shoes. That market is so hot right now I think you would have no problems.

Think how the buyer would feel if he opens it 6 months hence and finds a pig in a poke aka spotted coins. You had no knowledge of it so why would you feel badly. That would also be way past any reasonable return period. There is some risk in buying those unopened boxes. Then again if there was a 3 piece gold set in there the buyer would have the last laugh.

    Sealed Box of 8 Sets

    Winning Bid $6,752.00

that's $844 each - a seller could hardly complain about that at all. image

    That sums it up.

Waiting for $1000 or $1200 per set aint worth it if you can't sleep until then.

Personally I have 4 MS69'a and a PF70ucam I plan to sell when I think the prices have peaked.
But I sense no pressure to sell.
    My 5 RP69's I don't plan to sell I like them a whole bunch.

When I sell those I might just find a gold RP (some say the gold isn't as impressive as the silver?) and add a Plat RP if the Mint makes one. I think those 3 would look pretty good in a multi holder.

I thought final value fees were closer to 5.75% and paypal fees were 3%. Add in listing fees and the bays take is close to 10%. This isn't really bad when you consider the size of the market that is open to you.

Sealed Box of 5 - $4502.00 winning bid

    $900.40 each !

$42.00 Shipping - imagine if the Mint charged $42.00 instead of the current $4.95.

My sealed box of 5 is waiting, at least, until $1000/set (so, $5000). I sold the last one just a couple of months ago for ~$1400... image

Ebay fees are 5.25% of the first $25; if the sale is over $25, fees are 3.25% + $1.31. PayPal fees are 2.9% + $.30. So total fees will be around 6.5%.
