Question from eBay member.

notwilightnotwilight Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭
"Hi, I would like to know if is possible to ship to New Jersey? I am very interested so I'll wait a response. Have a nice day"

There is an obvious answer to this one and getting it right is very important. What is it?

Does the answer have anything to do with the grammar?

No, maybe I'm being too vague. Hint. First thing to do is check to see if the same message went to your e-bay inbox.

If it didn't go to your ebay inbox, then its a phisher, and don't respond or hit any links. Is that what you're alluding to?

No, I didn't respond. This is one of the breed of scams that try to get your brain thinking with anything but the cautions logical part. In this case you will either wonder why he's asking such a stupid question or start thinking of a smart, witty, condescending, insulting, humerous, or pitiful answer depending on your personality.

However, out of curiousity I clicked on the link. His server is http://orsi.ouc.edu.cn and it is so damn slow that you have a long time to reconsider your mistake.

Just wanted to make people aware of this tactic. A similar one is the "I'm leaving negative feedback and calling the police" trying to get you to click quickly out of anger.

I don't get it? You didn't mention a link in your OP. Besides, why would you click a link instead of just hitting the "reply" button?

Sorry. I must be vague tonight....the link I'm referring to is the bogus link to a bogus ebay page that he linked to the "Reply" button. In these scams you click on the button to reply to the bogus message and you're taken to a fake ebay login screen where you type your name and password into the scammers server and voila!! you've been hijacked.

Did his mail have a fake link to sign into ebay? If it did it's phishing.

But why in the world would you click a link in an email? I *always* just hit the reply button on Outlook to email them directly.

You may have to read between the lines here. The buyer may be trying to make an offer off the ebay system, and does not want to flag your account for fee avoidance. Once you reply, you can negotiate off their messege system. Another more likely possibility is the guy may just be fishing for email addresses. Once you reply directly, he has yours.

Sorry, I did not read the thread all the way through before responding. He is definately trying to get your email address. You were smart to ignore it.
