When you're buying coins on the BST forum

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,789 ✭✭✭✭✭
does it matter to you who the seller is?
If so, what matters to you?

• Does it matter if they seem to only show up on the BST (ie...they aren't on the coin forums themselves)?
• Does it matter if they have a hidden profile?
• Does it matter how long they have been here?
• Does it matter if they are a business vs an individual? What about a collector vs a wannabe?
• Does it matter how they list (ie....with pics/without pics? Short descriptions? How clear their terms are?)
• Does it matter how they handle themselves when issues arise?
• Is communication a big thing for you or not when you deal with someone? Ie....you pay. Does it matter if the person tells you when it was shipped and gives a tracking number or not? Or, do you just wait?
• Does a return policy matter, or not?

I thought I would ask the question in light of the recent issue on the boards. It got me to thinking what I expect when I buy on ebay vs the BST....and, I am wanting to keep this discussion about the BST, not ebay.

For me, unless I know the person from board interactions, I would be highly hesitant if someone doesn't have their profile on but they are selling. Doubling so if they only seem to hang out on the BST.
I have bought from "newbies" but I do try to be careful there as well.

I prefer pics but if they appear to be above board and descriptive, then I will buy just on a description. I do make sure there is a return policy, for any reason, though.
Whether someone is an individual (collector class) or a business doesn't matter to me but I will definitely hold someone doing it as a business to a higher standard and expectations (in shipping, etc).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I don't think there's a "checklist" per se. I think you have to look at the overall picture and go with your gut, other than that there may be a few showstoppers if not addressed.

If I see a BST item I want and the seller takes PayPal, I will buy.

I fund off-EBAY PP buys with a credit card. If there is a problem,
PP or the credit-card company will help me.

It is important for buyers and sellers on the BST to note:

There is NO buyer/seller protection scheme through PP on
non-EBAY transactions. Under that scheme, PP funds the
relevant guarantees to EBAY members. With off-EBAY
transactions paid via PP, a different set of procedures is
used to solve problems, and PP does not "guarantee"
protection for either the buyer or the seller.

I go by who posts and sells kinda regularly.
I can get a feel with different conversations/posts on who can be trusted and who can't. Plus, if I'm just not comfortable myself, I ask a couple people also. Chances are they've had some interaction with them in the past.

Overall, I feel good about buying on the BST's

Actually, I have only visited the BST forum about a dozen times, all with no success. It seems there are too many CU members wanting to buy up all the Busties they can find.image

Five years of buying and sometimes selling on the BST forum has had nothing but pleasant transactions except for one and that person is no longer active here. Most of the people I knew from the Registry forum. This last problem will not change anything if I decide to get active there again. Right now Ebay has what I want.

Some good questions you've posed here. I cannot say that I have a hard and fast set of terms and rules I follow with reguard to the BST. I have bought many coins some from longstanding board contributors and some not. I've never had any issues (knock on wood) with anyone on my bst dealings. Overall I think we all would prefer to see what we are buying and yes I allways check for references if I've not done business with the seller before and wihtout fail insurance is a must.image

when buying though, please don't play email/PM tag with the seller. A couple of years ago there was about a 10-12 day and 10 email volley match going between me and a potential buyer before I finally called it off and put it on ebay. That's partly my fault that I let it go that long. If you want to buy either make a committment to send your MO right off the bat or send paypal payment instantly. If youre waiting for a cash deposit into paypal then at least let the seller know that you're waiting for that to clear.

All my BST dealings have been satisfactory.
People who only list items there I avoid.
    Payment method doesn't trouble me.

I have sold and purchased gold and silver on the BST with NO problems, I would ONLY pay with paypal/credit card and I have no problem accepting paypal. I understand a buyer wanting that protection the same way I do. Also If I say a price includes shipping then I am responsible for insuring and whatever else to make me comfortable because if it is stolen or lost I am liable.

It is not complicated, this is a forum and most on it are honest, however it is best not to let that fact negate the right way to do Buss over the internet.

I try to be careful when I enter into a buying agreement on the BST. Similarly, I would hope that in those instances that I offer something on the BST that folks would take into consideration my body of work on the boards while they read the offer.

I do not make many purchases on the BST boards, but for the times I have made purchases the service and communication factors have been at the least satisfactory and often times have been more than pleasant.

Occasionally I list coins available for sale on the BST boards. Relatively speaking the sales generated from the BST listings are a very tiny fraction of my weekly total sales. For the most part the people I have interacted with from the BST boards have been relatively pleasant and straight foward to deal with although there are a few board members who are known to me for being notoriously slow on payment or who try to beat down on your prices. Those folks are the ones whose requests are considered last when there are more than one person interested in the same item.

As evidenced on my BST post from today, then there are always a few people who go out of their way to be difficult or who attempt to pull a fast one on you then spew contempt at you when you call them out on it. Check out the fourth post on my thread here and my subsequent response. I guess you can't expect everybody to have common sense.

Generally, I like to deal with people who are respected and post here often...

Spammers and folks who only use the BST to sell I try to avoid like the plague.

I've had all good experiences on the BST....Both buying and selling

    • Does it matter if they have a hidden profile? No.

    • Does it matter how they list (ie....with pics/without pics? Short descriptions? How clear their terms are?) They should have pics or at least a good description.
