I see a hunk of bullion that is cool.
I like the design.

I also see a lot of $$$$

Hmmm....When I look at an ASE, I also hear something.....a lot of WHINING from those that can't appreciate people not collecting what they deem "appropriate" to collect....and who seem to resent people who made money on the 2006 20th Annv series. Good thing I am going deaf

There is no doubt that these are beautiful pieces...of bullion. They are pleasing to look at, fun and profitable to own for some. To each their own.

These coins, or any other modern Mint products, are not for me though...and that's OK too.

It was in the 20th Anniversary set. I thought it looked awesome. I popped off the U.S. Mint capsule to expose the true surface before snapping the photos. My lighting sux but this one is an awesome specimen. Thanks!

The 2006 W that I posted is a rarity in that only 47,000 were minted. I wouldn't call that bullion. Nor would I refer to any of the Proofs in the series as bullion. I do believe the Walking Liberty design is one of the most beautiful and most popular designs to appear on a coin whether it is a circulating piece or "bullion". And for those of us who collect a series by date and mint, the uncirculate no mintmark bullion pieces are required.

One investor's bullion is another collector's quest.

Plus, you'll never get a counterfeit coin buying from the US Mint regardless of the base metal, there's always a buy it now feature, they won't charge you $2.95 for $50 worth of insurance, don't overgrade their stock (barring the returnable piece), or won't neglect to send your item and keep your money. But, the shipping can be a bit slow. I find most of this this a refreshing change, unfortunately you have to go elsewhere for the classics where you can throw back in the forementioned pitfalls and add a few more.

I've always liked the Walking Liberty half dollars, so to me it's logical that I like the ASEs. Same beautiful obverse with the heft of a 1 ounce coin.

I think SAE's are a fantastic coin to collect and a great method of introducing folks to the pleasures and pains of coin collecting!

All true! But where's the challenge? Where's the adventure? Where's the need and the desire to research your chosen collecting field and learn all you can about the history, grading nuances, minting techniques, rarity and other factors that contribute to why coin collecting is such a fun hobby?

Just my two cents...however, like I said in a previous post in this thread, collect what you like and like what you collect. It's all good!

That's what you start to get when you expand on ASEs and look back to their inspiration: 1916 -- 1947 Walkers.

Can I get slab with one or two of these halves combined with an ASE?

How about this layout: ASE proof, MS65+ Walker, ASE unc, PR65+ Walker, ASE RP? Let us know, NGC....

I'm challenged when I get up in the morning. Some days, it's an adventure just to put on my shoes and get the garage door open fast enough to keep the dogs from having an accident. Seriously, time is a continuum and it is also relative. In 100 years, someone might look at a roll of Eagles that I saved and think "I wonder what it was like then?" Life goes on.

History is now. Grading nuances - hey, if you haven't tried grading a PR-70 Silver Eagle, you ought to try it. There's not alot of difference between a 1 point difference on the high end of the scale, just as there isn't alot of difference between a one point difference on one of those other, more familiar coins you might like.

Minting Techniques? Rarity? Those factors are still in large part as influential in the collectability of Silver Eagles as they are in the collectibility of any other coin. The Mint employs a wide variety of minting techniques these days, and the technology has improved, along with the quality. If quality was poor, we might have something to complain about, and I can't believe it when some people deride the fact that there are alot of high quality specimens out there. That will change over time, no doubt.

Some of the Moderns being minted these days will be looked upon as the very first in several new series that could very well last for decades. Some of the new variations, i.e., the bimetallic Congress Commemorative, and the Reverse Proofs will be sought after from this point onward, and will become more sought after every time the Mint issues another subsequent coin in the series.

Yes, history is being made. Yes, the coins are expensive from the Mint. And yes, there are speculators - without whom the mintages might be much, much lower. All of this shall pass. The coins will do their own talkin'. Nobody needs to hype them.
