How long do you wait before filling a NPB

I had an auction ended last week by a buyer who used buy-it-now. The buyer has been a member of eBay for 1 1/2 years but has a 0 feedback rating, no purchases no sales. I sent him an invoice for the auction a few hours after he ended the auction; 1 1/2 days later I sent him an e-mail asking what method of payment he would be using to pay for the auction; today I sent him another e-mail asking how he would be paying for the auction. I have not been given any responce to my attempts to contact him.

How long after the auction was ended would you wait before filing a non paying bidder claim with eBay?

I think you are required to wait ten days.

    Don't wait 46 days. image

I do think it's 10 days before you can file and then you have to wait up to seven days for the refund of your FVF.

If it was me and I wanted to make the sale then I would call the buyer before filling an NPB. It could be his e-mail is being filtered or he has changed it since he registered with Ebay. JMHO

I wait two weeks usually-but i just NARU'd spiderdude919 with his fourth neg feedback. He had zero at the time he bid and was new. Won like 22 auctions totalling close to $3,000. I figured he would not pay--He didn't. Three other sellers just hit him with negs. My neg. sent him packing.

I send the invoice thing if I don't get paid in 2 weeks. Then one week later I send I reminder. Then one week after that I file the NPB.

    DBK, I decided to follow your advise and try to contact the buyer by phone;
Went to the auction page, clicked on the buyers hot link, there is no contact information given. Only says when they signed up on eBay and that they're U.S. located.
Opened the eBay Item sold email; again no phone number just an address in Fredricksburg, VA. and a note that says (Please confirm with buyer that the address is correct).
Went back to his info page on eBay and clicked on the contact buyer hot link; this takes me to the send message page, here I noticed something I didn't see before a note that says:

Note: The user you are contacting is registered on another eBay site and may speak a different language. Your message will be sent exactly as typed below.

My auction was set up for sales only within the U.S. so how is someone from "another eBay site" able to participate in an auction that is supposed to be to U.S. accounts only?

You can file after 7 days.

    I file after 29 days.

MOST NPBs pay fast when EBAY reminds them.

The trend on expensive BINs is to use the
    "immediate payment required" feature. It
keeps the scamsters away, but can cut
    down on multiple-item purchases.

Many otherwise good folks simply forget to
pay, or get involved in some other drama
    that distracts them.

Well I am going to the Philippines to get my wife; hopefully May 25th, but more likely June 1st. If I haven't heard from this guy or recieved good payment before I leave than I will hit him with a NPB when I get back!

The reason I was selling the coins was to pay for the plane tickets, I guess I will just have to use credit cards image

Look at your preferences in the listing to make sure you checked
block bidders "registered in countries to which I do not ship."

If a foreign buyer gives a US address on his foreign site, he will
NOT be blocked from bidding with the above exclusion.

I have over 300 positive feedback as both buyer and seller and I got hit with the NPB complaint 4 days after the auction closed. This was one where they took Paypal for everything except the item I bought. Boy, Talk about over zealous sellers!!!! He told me he received the money order but will wait 10 days for it to clear (they are as good as cash!!!) and hasn't even had the courtesy to close the complaint.

The dispute console should not accept a NPB
after four-days, unless the boxes noted below
    are checked.

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Usually the seller must wait 7 days after a listing closes to file an Unpaid Item Dispute. However, in the following exceptional cases, the seller can file a dispute immediately:

At the time of the filing the buyer is no longer a registered user of eBay.
The seller and buyer wish to mutually withdraw from the transaction.
In the first case the buyer will receive an Unpaid Item strike and the seller will receive a Final Value Fee credit without any additional steps.

In the second case the seller must file the dispute for mutual withdrawal. If the buyer responds to the dispute and agrees, the seller will receive a Final Value Fee credit and no strike will be given to the buyer. If the buyer fails to respond, the seller can still close the dispute to receive a Final Value Fee credit, and the buyer will not receive an Unpaid Item strike.

I would try to contact the person first to see if there are any issues that you might not know about.

10 days customary however there are exceptions as noted:

    1) I cannot verify the identity of the member.
    2) All attempts to communicate have proven fruitless.
    3) I no longer wish to wait on this buyer for the aforementioned reasons nor do I
have the desire to even attempt to speak with this person. Time is Money and this is
wasting your Time and you have a solid underbidder ready to buy NOW!

I have had some strange zero feedbackers, the vast Majority of which are NARU.

Conversely, sometimes events DO transpire unexpectedly and Patience proves to be wise.

Example are - circumstances like what happened to BOOK.
True computer problems and the inability to get back online.

In both you sure would feel badly for causing one needless grief due to circumstances beyond anyone's control,
and about the time you do what you feel is right, the buyer surfaces with money in hand along with credible, verifiable Proof.

There is no way to block zero feedbackers, even those that create several IDs and never use some but every now & then and have yet to win anything. Standard procedure for me is as soon as I spot a zero feedbacker I do an Advanced Search by bidder, obtain contact info thru eBay and drop a subliminal "Hello, I know who you are" on him or her which usually brings about a call or an ask the seller a question OR if the amount is substantial enough to truly concern me, I am the one that does the contacting, even going so far as calling the # provided, if there IS one.

Know your rights as a seller and follow your gut feelings. JMHO, of course. image
Sometimes you just "feel" things aren't right and in cases like this when nothing works
exercise this latter option, open & close the dispute on those grounds and move on.

    Good Luck. image

    I do a 7/7

Seven days Non Paying bidder Reminder from Ebay

Seven Days after that bammed ... ESPECIALLY with a BUY NOW I probably
    would be less patient.

At a month, I send a reminder. If still not paid a week or two later, I get the NPB in under the 45-day deadline.

Ok, it has been a week since this person ended my auction using buy-it-now. I sent him an invoice and three e-mails through eBay. Haven't heard a peep back from them. There account doesn't have any contact information listed. I will wait till Monday but then I am starting an NPB.

People if you end an auction by hitting the BIN button you need to pay for the item!

You are right, there. If you win an auction, you need to pay for it.
However, sometimes sellers jump the gun a little. Sending an invoice right away is fine, but sending a "how will you pay" only 1 1/2 days later is kind of impatient, in my book.
Could depend on how you phrase it.

Only a week so far and you are worried? I've had them take over 1-2 weeks. One time, no response from my winner and I found out later it was because she was embarrassed and trying to figure out how to get her address confirmed on paypal (took her a couple of days and she was trying to do it on her own....simple for some people, a little more work for others).

If there is no contact phone number, you can contact ebay and they may naru the person. Not sure how it works for people in other countries.

Again though, I think you are really jumping the gun....some people have lives and don't live by the PC (are you paypal only or do you have checks/money orders as options?) and some people's email filter grab things.

What's your auction link? What type of terms did you have in the auction regarding payment (even though, as already said by others, ebay's term is 10 days before filing).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Sometimes you get those poor communicators that don't reply to the email but wait a couple days and mail a check or money order. Doesn't sound like one of those this time though.

...or it could be one of those - mail you a money order from a foreign country exceeding the auction total and asking for some type of partial refund scams. This may explain the communication difficulty, maybe they're from China and can't read English.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

I don't believe that I was being pushy; here are copies of the messages I sent to the buyer who voluntarily ended my auction ahead of schedule with other people watching the auction:

Auction ended using buy-it-now on May 11th at 11:53:43 PDT
Invoice sent to buyer on May 12th at around 6:00:00 PDT

First message sent to buyer through eBay May 13th at around 8:00:00 PDT:

    message body: "Hello Elian,
I don't mean to be a pain, but could you please let me know how you will be paying for this item. I married a Philippina 10 months ago and she just had her visa approved by the U.S. Embassy in Manila so I need this money for plane tickets. If we can complete this transaction quickly I would be grateful!

    Thanks,
    Gareth R. Smith"

Second message sent to buyer through eBay May 15 at around 10:30:00 PDT:

message body: "Please contact me immediatly regarding what method of payment you will be using on this auction which you ended voluntarily by using the buy-it-now feature!"

Third message sent to buyer through eBay May 17 at around 11:30:00 PDT:

message body: "Dear sir or madam,
You choose to end this auction early using the buy-it-now feature. I have sent you an invoice and this is my third attempt to contact you to determine how you will be paying for this auction item! eBay frowns severely on people using buy-it-now and than refusing to complete a transaction. You are a 0 feddback eBay member meaning you have no sucessful transactions to date. Having a Non Paying Bidder action started against you could easily cause eBay to ban you from the site. Please contact me immediatly regarding this transaction!

All message and invoice where sent through eBay message system so they would be in both the buyers e-mail and in thier eBay message folder. If they have access to eBay to hit the buy-iy-now button on an auction then they have access to eBay to read thier messages/invoices and to complete payment on a transaction that they voluntarily ended!

When someone uses buy-it-now to end an auction they should be required to complete that transaction at that time by sending payment through PayPal or by going through a checkout process that designates how they will be paying for the item. Until this is completed the auction should remain active so that legitimate buyer have a chance at bidding and so that sellers are not screwed, like I seem to have been on this one.

Yes Bochi my accepted methods of payment are more than just PayPal; the accepted methods of payment listed where PayPal, Money Order, Cashiers Check, Personal or Company Check.

Here is a link to the auction link

Monday will be 10 days since the buyer ended the auction using buy-it-now, at this point I don't even want to deal with this person. There are too many red flags with this buyer! 1 1/2 year eBay member with 0 Feedback, no contact information, U.S. address for a non-U.S. eBay account and failure to respond to invoices and messages sent!

If this person had no intention of completing the transaction they had no right to end my auction early using buy-it-now image

Yes, you were being pushy. Sending a followup after only 36 hours is pushy. Period.

It would be nice if every buyer paid within minutes of auction close; it would be nice if every buyer complied with every wish of the seller; it would be nice if every buyer communicated; it would be nice if every buyer followed instructions perfectly; it would be nice if every buyer kissed our glorious seller ass. They don't. It's eBay. Get over it.

Using the Immediate Payment Required feature on BINs,
completely eliminates NPBs. The item remains listed until it is
    paid for.

Ok Gar, and take this with a grain of salt because I am not trying to attack you but am trying to point a few things out...

    1) You state you are selling because you need the money for a plane ticket....like asap, right? You put yourself into a short timed situation and are anxious...and are now taking that anxiousness out on a bidder. Don't. Unfair to them.

    2) You ARE being pushy and it appears you are trying to be threatening. Stating that someone is a 0 feedback seller and that ebay frowns "severely" upon something...you are speaking for ebay now? You are their mouthpiece?

    3) You are ASSuming that someone logs into ebay daily, that someone with 0 feedback knows the ebay system and will hit their mail, etc. I never paid attention to the mail portion until I started selling...I've been an ebay member for a LONG time. Until I joined this coin board, I never checked ebay daily (still don't, but more frequently than before).

    4) You are sending emails to the person every 2 days! If I were that person, and had been away from my PC or email for a few days (like I was this week, for a work trip) and got back to see that, I would be P*SSED at you as a seller.

That all said, aside from how you are doing the follow-up on this one, I like your auction, your terms, and wouldn't hesitate to buy from you based on what I have seen on your auction.....however, if you want to set expectations on immediate payment, state it in your auction.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The wait is 7 days. I will usually send out multiple emails , if no response within the 7days, I file.
Sometimes after the filing the bidder will pay, since once you file Ebay, contacts the bidder to pay
and describes the non-paying bidder policy.
If someone can click the button to purchase, they can click it to check out, and or pay after the auction.
