The true PKOK coin story, part 3.

A flash of lightening awakened the man from his daydreaming. The rain had stopped, but the thundering continued. The houselights began to flicker. That dreadful lesson learned as a boy began to eat away at him. He pondered for a bit. He lifted his eyebrow.

Tonight was the time to steal back that color which had eluded him for many a year, color which was stolen from him in years past. His face began to grin, the wrinkles began to form, he had a fiendish idea.

He again looked about the dank basement walls. Containers of paints, all colors, all quanities stared back at him. His eyes spotted many a chemical, ammonia, bleach, acids of all sorts. The wheels of his mind began to turn, his eyes began to role. Some experimentation tonight? Yes, why not? His heart began to flutter.

He jumped from his stool and quickly made way upstairs to his room. Through the doors, down the hall, coming upon the bed, under which he there lay a hidden box containing a myriad of old silver and copper coins. Some of which were his prized collection, some of which were simply discards of an earlier time. The man's face became flush as he sorted out the silver. Some quarters, some halves. Then he came upon a roll of dollars. Peace, Morgans. The coins which he had put away years ago during happier days. He grudingly pulled them out. "These will do for now", he spoke aloud.

Returning to the basement, his gait was much slower, almost methodical. He was devising his master plan. He thought out the method to attain the color.

Although this man of middle years was a simple folk, he knew enough to start the process. The evening was long and there were many hours of work ahead. A dab of this, a smattering of that. Was it good enough? No, no, no. A light brushing here, a drop there. Was it getting close? Not even. The hours wore on.

It had to be a mixture, just right, just enough, lying fallow on the surface of the coin. Within seconds, the pretty colors that seemed so far away began to take form. And then as quick, they were gone. The process seemed right, the end result was close. He refined his mixture, and tried again.

As the morning sun rose, light peeked through the basement window. He opened it and let the fresh scent of rain dew seep into the room. The rays of sun shown upon the workbench, his coins glimmered rainbows. He had achieved his goal...........and he was very proud.

A total of five coins were toned. Nicely colored greens, blue, yellows. A couple of Morgans, a Peace dollar, a few Franklin halves. The day was young. The man gathered his newfound treasures and began to show them about town. "Very impressive", declared the local coin dealer, "How much"? "They are not for sale.", was the man's retort. "Ohh, quite pretty", said the collector friend, How much?" They are not for sale.", again was the reply, "I love the color too much."

"Why don't you set up with me at the local coin show this week and show off your lovely colored gems?", the collector inquired. "I'm sure many folks would love to see your coins." The wrinkles on the man's face became deeper, more serious. "Yes, I will do that.", the man replied. Something nefarious had come to pass. "Yes, I WILL do that."

Maybe someone should set up at a show and sell nickels at 7 cents apiece. That's below melt!

A lot of collectors set up tables at small, local shows. These are often the shows hosted by their local coin clubs.
