I checked into the symbolic background of bees and beehives, in a nutshell it respresents industrious and working hard together
as each bee has a certain job within the hive to help make all things work together properly. I would guess this could be applied symbolically
to economic matters as well.

The beehive also has appeared on various obsolete currency of the pre civil war period.

I don't know ... but I like that copper. And, to expand upon Michigan's thought, the beehive is a Masonic icon and also a symbolic representation of the Fibonacci sequence.
