How many die pairs were used for the 27-S? I noticed that the mintmark seems to have two diff. positions, indicating more than one die. I was under the impression that this is not a common date and I would think there wouldn't be that many dies used.
However these were NEVER relaesed form the treasury, except to collectors who requested them.
There are less that 150 total coins, most in low grades. Mntage is a terrible indicator with Saints. There were 180,000 1927-D's made as well, and that's a $1.5MM coin in MS65.
There's a better POS NGC66 that hasn't sold in 5 auctions! And the owner is terrified to crack it out. He would gladly settle for 65, but it won't grade.

edited to add: Only the first image showed up when I looked at it before
Edit: it looks much better and different in its Heritage photo. There it could be either a very choice unc or even gem.

Just to see how bad these can come...the top coin is an NGC66!!!!
I'd take a PCGS65 and a penalty over that one.
Because it's interesting
or in nerd terms a low end 5
Wow the guy that submitted that one to ngc had to be happy!

Just goes to show. Buy the coin and the holder!
I have my doubts that it was.
All I know is that there are TWO NGC66's that the 2 owners will not crack out because they do not think they will grade 65.
I've seen both. The one I saw recently, IMO, was tampered wth. I don't know how...but it just looks wrong. Very wrong.
