ANACS VAM Submission

Well, I am trying to get together a submission to ANACS for their current $14 promotion. Here is my list of what I put into the box in the first round. I didn't do the 1922-D ones (a huge numbe rof them) because I am completing a study for Leroy Van Allen on them that should be quite interesting. I think he would appreciate them raw for his inspections. Learned a few things doing this. (1) I finally forced mysef to figure out a handful of them that I avoided. (2) 1892-O VAM-7 (Doubled Ear) has been rolled into VAM-5 in the latest update. (3) One VAM Leroy gave me (1889-O VAM-1C) hasn't been listed int he update the past couple of years. (4) A number of coins I have ket around thinking, for some reason, were worth more indeed are not. (5) Some coins I priced or estimated form VAMView cannot possibly be worth THAT much....so I cut them in half or less than that. (6) Leroy's rarity estimates are generally quite good, but are off a bit on several of them.

Anyway, after doing the spreadsheet, it was clear which ones will be coming out of the box. Any of them I priced under $50 (especially if they had problems) don't make sense. Some were destined for PCGS in the next shipment, like the 1890 VAM-15A ULDS that is a 65 or 66, but I might just send it to ANACS anyway. It's better protected in plastic than in a flip. Any VAM experts, or getting closer to experts, have any ideas on this list? Anything that I may have grossly underpriced or overpriced (for the insurance)? (I am not selling them. Most are for my personal set for now. Some will eventually get out to eBay, but I am tired of the selling game for now.)

edit>> pared it down by removing ones I identified to pull from the box already. Got it down to 83 coins so far.

Here is that 21-D VAM-1BG. I really like it because I have seen so few of that date with anything approaching attractive natural toning.

Looks like a great submission. Good luck with it.
Certainly a fun area of numismatics.
  • Sweet set of VAM's! Personally, I have been seeing a drop in the prices of even slabbed PCGS coins. I would drop all that are under $50 and save them for when the public starts really getting into collecting them...even at $14/per you may be better off just keeping them in flips (or to keep the registry count vs. rarity down as I think a couple of those R5's are pretty scarce...would have to check....). Get the bigger ones in the ANACS slab until there are more of a variety of known attributed PCGS ones and I still don't think that PCGS has started recognizing discovery VAM's as of yet.
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • Looks like a great list. Let us know how they all grade out.....

Well, I was able to work out a bulk submission deal and sent out 120 coins (over 8 lbs) yesterday. That's a lot of work to put together; don't know how in the world Logan does that regularly. First time I sent anything to ANACS an will be interesting. The best coins (or more valuable ones) I think were an 1882-O VAM-29A, 1880-O VAM-13C (rare EDS), 1896-O VAM-19, 1921-D VAM-1BG (gorgeous gem toner), 1921-D VAM-9B (that I thought was a VAM-5A until I looked closer), 1902-O VAM-3 (finest questionable micro o I have ever seen), 1901-O VAM-1A, and 1900-O VAM-15A (a superb example).
