Not an expensive coin by any means, but still.

Harshly cleaned or am I over-reacting?

I'm holding off on the neg feedback until I can see if we get this resolved.

I'd like to see the specific auction in question to see how the coin was represented before passing judgment.

Looks holdered by PCGS and appears to be die polish lines. Common on steel cents and not a problem at all.

Those lines sure look like they are in the fields only and stop when they get to the details of the coin. If that is so then what you are seeing is die polish lines and not cleaning.
  • Hard to tell from the pictures. Are you sure those scratches are from cleaning? Are you sure those are scratches at all?
  • Well, I know nada about differentiating between a cleaned coin and any other cause. But I will state my observation is that the reverse doesn't show and 'scratch marks' on the lettering... and the scratches seem to go up to the letters - so I would GUESS - Not cleaned. (maybe die polish scratches??)

That's what I was thinking. But I get in trouble when I do that.

They look like die polish lines to me. Isn't it in a PCGS holder?

    Die polish.

I was thinking die polish marks also, not cleaning.

However, if the die polish marks weren't stated, or a picture of the coin in the auction didn't show these because it was taken at a certain angle, I would still ask for a refund if you think it distracts from the coin. Even if these are die polish marks, somehow it should have been stated in the auction (either typing it or seeing it in the photo). Otherwise, I think it is deceptive.
  • Totally die polish.
  • Interesting, I agree with the group. They look like die polishing hairlines.

    Can you post better pics?

    Thanks for the comments.

That's what I was looking for, an education from you people.

If the concensus is die polish lines, what do you grade it?

That's the best I can do really.

I had to tilt it at an angle just to get them to show up.

Can you tell if they are raised markes? Probably best chance to tell with the larger ones on the reverse.

Very common example of die polish. I Many high grade steel cents show this sort of die polish. If these were hairlines from being cleaned, the hairlines would be very harsh on the raised devices. Instead, these seem to run under the devices which is expected for die polish.

  • I'd say MS64ish. It looks decent enough. My neck is sore, though.

Even if he takes a refund, it will probably be less the $2.50 shipping charge, plus you'll have to spend another $2 or so to send it back. You'd be better off keeping the coin, even if it was harshly cleaned.

If you have to hold the coin at just the right angle in just the right lighting for the lines to show up, it's possible the seller didn't notice them. It's not a coin people would generally spend an inordinate amount of time under a loupe with.
