Alan Herbert decries "dirty politics" in ANA governors race to oust Cippoletti

In an editorial in the most recent issue of Numismatic News. Among the things he says:
"Chris Cippoletti is a loyal man of honor, a trait sadly lacking in some of his critics".
"This election has been tainted by outright lies, misrepresentation, innuendo, manipulation of the candidates and distoration of the truth. Dirty politics at its worse"
He says he is ashamed to be associated with someof the people who already have done grave harm to the ANA with their unwarranted
attacks. It is not too hard to figure out who he is talking about. Kudos to NN for actually printing that statement.
He says the coalition to oust Cippoletti has been having secret meetings apparently to talk stategy in ousting Cippoletti.
Does such a coalition actually exist.
There is a lot more in the editorial but I won't repeat everything here.
Someone was asking where the current board of governors stood on things, well, at least one has spoken his mind.

I agree with both of you.
It's ironic that Herbert is complaining about secret meetings - what goes around comes around.
But as long as most issues of substance are under "executive session," or so it seems, and the current board wants the power to determine who can run against them, I believe I will be voting to clean house.

Yes, Michigan, one of the regime's members has spoken his mind (or is it someone else's mind). If there is such a coalition as the one mentioned, can he name who is in it? I am not a part of it and I have no knowledge of these so-called "secret meetings". While I respect Mr. Herbert as a numismatic writer and expert, I cannot do the same with his comments. Sounds like a bad case of diarrhea of the mouth on top of a bad case of paranoia. If anything, it is he and his allies who are playing dirty politics with these comments. Just plain pathetic!

<< <i>If the ANA were more transparent under Cipoletti, *maybe* Mr. Herbert would be proven right.

Then start by voting for me!

Of course it exists, they do a time share for their secret meeting place with the "Circle Of Trust" from the CU forum!

All members MUST vote in this election.
There are good candidates and better candidates.
Vote for the ones that you believe will do the best for the association and for the betterment of numismatics.
Do not automatically vote for or against anyone. Read and digest their statements and writings. Ask questions.
VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I agree with this.
Having said that, I have asked questions and others have, too. I want to know which incumbents support the veil of secrecy that has been hovering over Colorado Springs. I want to know which incumbents support increasing transparency and which prefer to do everything in "executive session." I want to know which incumbents support changing the bylaws so the board has to approve candidates in the future (the fox guarding the hen house). I want to know what incumbents think about *how* the Ostromecki affair was handled (I know how they voted, but I want to know if they endorse the way the matter was handled).
Though not explicitly stated, I think we know where Mr. Herbert stands on these issues -- squarely with Cipoletti. That's all I need to know where he is concerned.
If no incumbents reject the way things are being done in their "statements and writings," I will assume they support the status quo, and I would thus vote against them. I'm not a part of any secret cabal, but anyone on the board who closes ranks with Cipoletti and supports him unconditionally is not a candidate I can vote for.
<< <i>Do not automatically vote for or against anyone. Read and digest their statements and writings. Ask questions. >>
Will the "ask questions" part no longer be viable with the new gag rules for candidates the incumbents are putting forth? Anyone who is supporting the gag rule, or does not state their opinion on it, is a candidate to be replaced IMO.

Vote for me then - the ANA is not the CIA, and Colorado Springs is not Area 51!

Realistically, NO incumbent will publically state they disagree with what happened. For two years they had an opportunity to say it in Coin World and Numismatic News. What you want to hear from them now Just won't be said by them. Isn't it obvious? Steve

You're almost certainly right, but in the interest of fairness I will say that I continue to extend them that opportunity. Silence, as I said above, is tacit approval of the status quo and no one approving of the status quo will get my vote.

Loys of people joined the Nazi Party in WWII Germany. If they guarded their status despite personal objections and took the coward's stance of silent complicity, they didn't deserve to get off the hook. This is far from being that serious, though a voice silenced by choice will be regarded as part of the problem here too.

With three years of losses of approximately $1 million per year, in my opinion the ANA has too many checks and not enough balances! I would also say that these losses are indicative of an organization that is out of control.

Whatever "balances" it may have certainly doesn't apply to their budgets.

If I think long and hard, I might be able to come up with something linking the two.

Increasingly, the ANA has less to do with coins and more to do with ego-clashing politics.

Frankly... I am suspect of this boards' true motivation. There have been too many important decisions made with little or no input from the members. The only Positive I can think of right now is the Numismatist magazine.
In mainstream American politics we are plagued with too many Politicians with their own personal agenda and not enough Representatives who remember that they are supposed to be doing what we want done...instead of telling us what we need to do...or worse, making decisions and not even telling us about them "in the name of National security"... with the Adminstration we have today...I do not feel all that secure...
And so it is with the ANA these days...we have a board of mainly Coin Dealers... do they care about the hobby or the 'hobbyists'? Or are they more interested in furthering their own business interests?
Where are the collectors to represent the collectors who are the ones that the ANA is meant to represent?
...also, where, when and how are we members to get involved? I do not have the means nor the time to make every ANA convention...and I understand that the local level of the ANA has been somewhat dismantled by this Board...since I have joined I have not been approached by anyone in the organization for anything more than "Come to the convention" or "come to the summer seminar"...
what about local involvement?
I have joined other organizations in the past...I have always been welcomed and offered ways that I could be involved, meet other members and help the organization...not with a further spending of money...
The moment an organization has 'secret' meetings and shows the appearance of there being an organization within the organization...I'm 'outta' there...
I intend to wait for some "real" statements of intent by all those seeking office in this next election. Then I will decide on my votes...then we will see if positive AND REVEALING changes are made after the election.
...either the next board makes speedy changes to provide a simple and transparent ANA whose sole purpose is to promote the hobby, protect the hobby and further the education of the hobbyists... or I will not be renewing my membership.

I actually find this comparison unsettling and distasteful. A regime responsible for the wanton destruction of millions of human lives vs. a hobby group of a few hundred thousand and the egos involved... Maybe when they start throwing collectors into concentration camps... Puhleeeez.
