1825 O-102 Question...

Hi,

I have an 1825 O-102 Bust Half with something going on beneath the 5 in the date. It looks an awful lot like a 5 over 2 overdate to me, even though the coin is definitely an O-102. I'm wondering (and hoping!) that, as crazy as it sounds, maybe **ALL** O-102 coins were made from an overdate die, and that it's just never been noticed before. Or perhaps a few coins were struck before the overdate was noticed and the die was altered to remove the evidence before production resumed with that die?

The coin was studied in person by J.T. Stanton several months ago, and he agreed with me that it looks like a 5 over 2 overdate, and he even went as far as assigning a new FS number to it for the next Cherrypickers Guide, but then he backed off when we couldn't gather enough other outside support for it. Sheridan Downey also looked at the coin and said it was nothing, but I can't help thinking there's something there ~ it looks too good to me to be nothing.

I'm looking for other examples of O-102 coins that exhibit the same characteristics as this coin -- anyone have anything like this?

My photos were too large to upload here, but photos can be viewed at:

Thanks!

Pete

Welcome to the forum NasvilleCoinGallery. If Sheridan Downey told you it was nothing then I would think it is nothing. When it comes to capped busts halves..I would take his opinion over J.T. Stanton.

    Welcome

I don't really see anything that'd lead me to believe an overdate.
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

Welcome. There are several CBH experts here that I'm sure will offer opinions on this coin.Do you have any pics of

the whole coin? I don't have a 102,so I can't help there.Could it be a clash of some sort.?Doesn't look to be the

    right shape for a 2,but who knows?imageimage

The entire Capped Bust Half Dollar series has been studies most thoroughly over the past fifty years or so. Sheridan Downey's opinion supports this effort, and as far as I know, nobody has ever brought up the possibility of a 5 over 2 overdate for 1825. The mark inside the 5 looks raised, so something probably accidentally gouged the die.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • Thanks for all the welcomes, and for the opinions on my O-102. To answer one of the posts, yes, I own a coin shop just south of Nashville -- Nashville Coin Gallery in Franklin, TN across the interstate from Cool Springs Mall, just off of Carothers Parkway.

Thanks again to all who have and will reply. image

  • Another interesting thing was that at a large show I attended with this coin, I walked over to the Heritage table and showed it to them. At first the guy said it doesn't have the characteristics of an overdate. However, when I said, "Ok, what are the characteristics of an overdate?", he took the coin and looked at it again, and said "Well, actually it DOES have the characteristics of an overdate"... but he still rode the fence and basically said "I don't know".

So I've had some "Yes"es, so "No"s and some "I don't know"s... that's why I'm hoping to find some more examples of O-102 coins that show the same raised area inside the 5. I guess time will tell...
