WTF - eBay BS rises again

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,253 ✭✭✭✭✭
I listed 20 coin auctions last night. Today 4 of them were shut down by eBay. The reason they stated was that I listed cash as one of the accepted methods of payment and that was a violation of eBay policy. Since when is accepting cash against the friggin' rules?

I can see banning auctions where cash (or wire transfers) are the only payment options because those scream "scam." But when they are a CHOICE along with other options? Heavy-handed, IMO.

If I were more cynical I'd say it was part of a longer-term plan to make everyone use PayPal eventually.

i thought sending cash through the mail is simply a bad idea.
bravo to ebay for stopping possible bidders from thinking that is
an alright option to pay! might as well send blank money orders too!

    Two words:

    Patriot Act

(I do not know if this is so, but it seems to be the justification of just about any other issue regarding problem financial transactions).

This is a quote from one of my auctions that talks about methods of payment I'll accpet...

"I accept Paypal (Credit Cards OK), Money Order, Cashiers Check, Cash and Personal Checks (NOTE-Item will not ship until personal check has cleared)."

I've been doing this for over 5 1/2 years and have never had the slightest issue with eBay or a buyer. Fuggin' idiots. How convenient that these auctions were listed yesterday during their 20¢ listing special. Now they have to be relisted today under their full price rates. What a bunch of fricking rooster suckers.

I guess eBay doesn't want to allow the use of U.S. legal tender for payment of transactions.

Long time. I used to list "well concealed cash" as an accepted payment option -- then I got a bunch shut down, too, for the same reason.

    Sucks, but whaddya gonna do?

I've paid for all my auction buys from the UK and Australia with U.S. currency. I just put it between a couple sheets of paper in an envelope.
I've never had a problem. I suppose someday some jerk will take my money and not send the goods, but it hasn't happend yet.
These foriegn Ebay auctions routinely state they accept US cash.

Last I checked, sending cash in the mail was a bonehead move to begin with.

Anyone pay their utilites that way? I didn't think so....

Who cares? If a buyer wants to pay with cash it's their responsibility. It's legal tender for all debts, public and private.

Well, we live in a small town where we often pay the utility bill in person. If they gave me a receipt noting payment in full, sure, I'd pay my utility bill in cash.

They did the same thing to me except they sent me threatening letters after ending 15 or so listings that if I didn't fix the others, they would suspend my account. Very rude. So I had to update every single listing by downloading them, changing each one to take cash out of my payment options in the description, and upload them all again. They refunded my relisting fees though.

I don't know if anybody beat me to this, but I will gladly buy the coins for what the highest bid was when they got shut down.image

I don't advertise it but I have had many auctions that end around $10 and payment usually comes in cash. I don't mind it.
  • Ebay has many payment options that they have banned be cause they do not feel they are safe for the buyer because they have no built in protection. Cash is one of these "unsafe" methods of payment because the seller and disappear and you hav no recourse. Of course most of the methods that eBay consider to be unsafe are probably safe but do not pay fees into their pocket like the nice SAFE Paypal does. So they REALLY recommend you use Paypal! And to make it even MORE likely that you will they first required you to accept ALL forms of PayPal payments if you list it in your auction (So they get their 2.7% fee on ALL Paypal transactions because you will probably have to dump the free personal account immediately), and now they REQUIRE all new sellers signed up to accept PayPal! Remember this is the land of the Fees.

Strange, I just checked a dollar bill and it still says "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE" guess they will have to change that to exclude eBay.

Personally I don't like cash sent, I don't trust the mail as it is.

  • Cash IS ACCEPTED on Ebay. A seller cant force you to use cash, but in person to person payments cash is ok and it states this on Ebay rules. After you buy, Ebay has no idea how you paid if you didnt use Pay Pal.

  • Funny 5 or 6 years ago, your auctions would be ended if you displayed a PayPal Logo in it...

It was deemed un-safe but by then it was to late, so Mother eBay purchased PayPal and now it's safe..."-)

Now there on a buyer protection rampage to clean up there reputation...

Hope the cure isn't worse then the disease...

eBay = cashless society = devil in disguise

while sending cash in mail is not really safe, some people prefer to do business like that.

more and more they are implementing more BS, and making the eBay experience less and less desirable. More and more they are becoming 'goverment-like', thus making us break more rules behind their communist back.

image It's all about greed. They don't care if people get ripped off, they just want more and more money. There is no reason for an auction to be closed just because cash is listed as an acceptable payment method. Myself, I would never pay with cash. But there are those who would, and frankly, it's none of ebad's business.

Did somebody in this thread actually say: "nice SAFE PayPal"??? PayPal is no safer than any other method. I won a group of coins for $251.00 Sent them PayPal money from my PayPal Balance... Never got the coins. Went through all the PayPal steps. At the end I recovered .06 cents!!! They said his account was empty and they would try and recover it... that was three years ago. You know what I recovered? .06 CENTS!!!

Paypal is the safest payment method...although definitely not entirely safe and definitely not the cheapest. eBay owns paypal ya'll know, they just want more percentages of ebayers to send $$ with paypal so they're pocket books get some more padding.

Just think if you had sent him cash -- how easy would that be to recover?

Very true, both for buyers and sellers. Once you decide to enter into a transaction, any transaction, you're assuming a level of risk that the transaction will be completed to each parties' mutual satisfaction. Most times it is. Some times it's not. Those times suck, but what are you going to do? Hide in a cave?

I've paid cash for items won on eBay nearly 500 times over the years and never once had a problem, and that includes many overseas transactions. I put the cash in a small craft envelope folded within a sheet of paper.

Seems to me to be as safe as any other method of payment - it comes down to the reputation of the seller.
