How did Heritage get my new address??!!??

So I moved to Houston just a couple of weeks ago. I haven't even had a chance to update my mailing address for most things. In fact, all I've changed is my cell phone bill, credit card bill and I sent in the change of address thing on the cover of the Numismatist. Today I get a Heritage Auction catalog in the mailbox here in Houston. The only thing I can figure is that they got my new address through the ANA. Does ANA give out your address to coin auction companies?

  • I think the ANA does do that, but it is more likely they got it from the post office. I bought something at a big and tall shop in Denver 15 years ago and I still get an ad from them twice a year, 4 houses later!

    They're psychic.
  • If it says on the envelope, “Forwarding Address Requested” or some such thing, then Heritage is paying about 50¢ to the post office for the information.

It's possible they got it from your credit card, if you have one listed with them! Otherwise they probably got it from your forwarding adress at the post office!

Realy they have they little people that follow us around wherever we go and report whenever we have extra money to spend on coins! Check those bushes outside your house carefully image

Last year they lost track of me when I went to Macau for 6 months, so they started calling my house to find out why I wasn't bidding in thier auctions anymore (true story)!

I wouldn't necessarily blame the ANA for this one. Direct mail companies have data bases that are continually updated so that marketers don't lose track of whom they have identified as customers or prospects. Heritage and zillions of other direct marketers pay serious money to direct mail services for the info that lets them stay in touch with their roving customer base.

One of our staff still gets his Numismatist under a long-obsolete business name at a P.O. Box. He doesn't get anything else under that name. He recently received an offering for a numismatic book to the exact same business name, including abbreviations.

I can only conclude that the ANA is selling its mailing list, or more likely for security reasons using its mailing service to apply mailing labels to packets supplied to it by numismatic bulk mailers.
