A bit OT - Does anyone know of any web design/hosting sites that offer discounts to non-profits like

Our coin club is looking into creating a web site but our treasurer is tighter than the top of a snare drum and out operating budget isn't that big, so we "need" to find something that is quality but at low cost and show that the benefits out weigh the expense.

We currently have a member who is hosting a page through his email account, ( Omaha Coin Club image )and have had other suggestions that a page of that kind would be sufficient, but I find that hard to accept.

Do web design/hosting companies offer anything like that? Is it better finding a local company to work with?

Thanks for any help, suggestions, links, or guidance.

I'm not sure what kind of website you are after. Do you want one with a message board or online bid board? Those are the main features that I can see being worth paying for. The other thing about a website, is that having a nice one doesn't guarantee traffic. Building a nice website is one step, but getting prospective members to the site is another.

Does the club want to become a virtual coin club? Or is the focus going to remain local? If the latter, putting a lot of time and money into a website may not be a good investment. Other than vanity, what is the point? Young folks are going to go where the traffic and content is, whether it be here, or Ebay, or any number of informational sites on the web. For club members to exchange messages a link to a single thread on this board would be all that is needed for a small to medium size club. An email signup for updates or question and answer might be another way to go.

I'd think long and hard about the type of website that is desired, what the club wants to accomplish by paying to have a website, are those goals realistic or pie in the sky? If the primary goal is to increase membership, local efforts such as coin drops, giving presentations at local schools or other groups, advertising a free appraisal meeting, would be more effective. For coin drops, give each member some low cost coins in flips with a printed label about the club and meeting time and place, to leave as tips or gifts. A free appraisal night could be advertised like a yard sale, and might bring in some new folks.

    Hi CoinHusker,

Our coin club is using 1&1 hosting. The site is easy to use. It was free for the 1st year and $6 a year after that. We do not make and mail a club newsletter each month. The web site is so much cheaper. Plus we have it linked from the ANA's club directory web page so people can find us.

i feel that you should seek out easy to use software that installs
by just putting it into your web directory.

a website has to be maintained, hence the reason someone should
    learn themselves.

often you have web interface at web hosting companies to control
the installation of such software.. then you log in and away you go.

but i have not heard of any free web dev for non-profits.
  • you could use the host I use for askaboutcoins.com, I can help with the discount. They host a few coin sites already and they are partial to coins and should be able to help.

go to http://www.askaboutcoins.com then click on the submit question buttion and that will put you in contact with the administrator of the site.

If the club is an ANA member, I think that They can help you.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

If anyone knows what the ANA can do to help coin clubs operate websites, that might be interesting information to post. It could be a valuable service the ANA provides the numismatic community.

i do not see the problem with this type of hosting at all.
now go download a free html editor and learn..

start with plain text, add a picture or two.
learn how to link back and forth between pages.

that look is very old school and i appreciate web pages with
more content then crap. you are basically, 90% there with what
    you have.

Our Fort Worth club has a simple page, but it brings in people to the meetings and shows.

I have looked into the ANA hosting our coin club's website. I haven't done it yet, but from what I remember is if you get a domain name registered, then the ANA will host it for free. So you can have your coin club's name as the URL address (instead of something like www.geocities.com/:my coin club"). However, you need to use a FTP to upload the website to the ANA host. It got a little complicated for me, as I didn't want to invest much time into developing a website for our smaller club. But I would definitely check with the ANA if you are a member club.

Contact Dan Collis Puro. He does a lot of work with non-profits and did some work for VTCoins.com.

If you get him to setup a WebGUI CMS for you, you can load and maintain a lot of nice content without any technical knowledge. It will have a lot more capability than many simple sites and be easy to operate.

    Chris Cipoletti responded to me:

    Hi Julian,

We do assist clubs with web hosting. There is no charge for the hosting and clubs can update the sites whenever they want. They can use basic “off the shelf” web design software for the site. We can also help a club design their site and maintain it with current information; there is a fee involved for that service. We are working on a basic template that we can offer clubs who are less technically savvy where they can select a few design options such as color scheme, images to include and then they can plug in basic information such as their meeting dates, locations, show dates, etc. This would be at no cost to the club and then the site would be hosted by the ANA.

If clubs have questions about this service, the best thing to do is contact webmaster@money.org.

    Thanks,

    Chris

I hope that this may be of some help.
