Preference- Proofs or Mint sets..

I know I have quit collecting and buying in mass quantity, but what is your preference?

I'm likin the old sets- 50-64, and yes I have been looking for as many in proof as I can do without getting into to much trouble.

So say ye- besides the cryptic old stuff and the modernistic looks of GW- give us your thoughts.

And if ya have a sweet RAW pic to post - let's see them.

I collect both. Proof sets 1950-present and mint sets from mint 1959- present and mint sets I put together in Capitol plastic 1933-1958. Don't have 33 gold or 34s peace dollar or double die etc.

I am not a fan of proof or mint sets, old or new. But if I was, I would think the older mint sets would be more of an attraction since earlier collectors tended to favor the proof sets and keep them together and keep them in better shape more often, as they were novelties over the regular strikes, making quality original mint sets a bit harder to find I guess. But I am not an expert by any measure on them, just what I would figure from what I observed.

  • I like the older mint sets because of the wicked toning that the cardboard holders created. Proof sets don't do anything for me unless there is a sweet CAM Franklin sitting in them.
  • Would you be persuaded by a dealer to purchase the proof sets that were 'sealed' at the mint story?

reason I ask, a dealer tried to sell me a boatload of 62-65 proof sets (yes I know the 65 was a SMS)- claimed all were 'sealed '. I was nice and did not go into detail with them unbtil he told me the price each- $25.00 - I almost wet my pants when he said this. I then asked him what he was paying for those 'sealed' proof sets- they of course did the blah blah.

I whipped out of my trusty pocket a widget coin- nothing special, just a 84-s in a old holder- he looked at er and said they missed the grade by a point or 2 - the Morgie is an au55- he felt it was a 50!!!!!!!

told me what I needed to know about this b&m person.

proofs were never sealed at the mint- too many dogs would have had to lick the envelope back in the 50's.

I like the old proof sets, too many of the mint sets have had their coins robbed and a lesser quality one put in it place. This has been going on for decades so most will be toned like a mint set coin.

I prefer proof, I have a 1902 Indian head proof cent that looks fantastic. image
