NEW DS PROGRAM--Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar series missing DIE STATES---Can you show any?

mozinmozin Posts: 8,755 ✭✭✭
Due to our newest CU members displaying their interest in displaying all CBH die states, instead of only marriages, I have expanded this series to include all the Overton die states. Some listed are recognized, but not listed in the Parsley fourth edition.

Some pictures were no longer showing, so we need some marriages that had already been posted.

Here is the list of Overton marriage die states that need to be shown: (The question marks after some of the rarity number means they are best guesses.)

1807 O-114a R5?

1808 Finished! Please continue to show 1808 duplicates.

1809 O-108a R4, 114 R5

1810 O-101 prime (No die cracks or clashes) R7?

1811 Finished! Please continue to show 1811 duplicates.

1818 O-101 R1, 114 R3

1819 O-110 R3

1820 O-104a (May not exist.) R5?

1821 O-103a 3, 104a R2

1834 Finished! Please continue to show 1834 duplicates.

1836 O-105 R4-

If you own any of these Overton marriage die states, please show them in the appropriate mint year thread. image

    Good thought.image

    =================================

It might help us to keep updated, and to bring this thread to the top, if members would indicate here when they post missing CBH marriages.

I know I have said this before, but let me say so here.

Thank YOU Mozin for all the time and effort you put into this series of threads. It was/is an incredible success and a great source of reference for the CBH series. It is really nice to see the different marriages on real coins instead of always referring to pics in a book.
There have been a few great series of threads on these boards in the past several years (like the Frankie information series), but this one is right up there by the top of the list.

Thank you Mozin and congrats on a great series of threadsimage

    JRocco,

Thank you for the kind words. You certainly were a major contributor to our program, from start to date.image

I did get a bit of a surprise when I started scanning my coins. Found two CBHs that I thought I sold years ago.image Since Amanda started the mint year 1827 thread, and she no longer chooses to post on CU, I prepared all my 1827 marriages for future posting.

This series has taught me a lot, thanks to all the contributors. Hopefully, I did not help start members collecting early date AU CBHs. Stick to VF and XF, and leave the AUs for me.image

This might help. Perhaps you can confirm 108?

    That would be my attribution...

1 in date missing left base (although this is also seen on 103, however, on that variety all numbers in date slope to left. On reverse, E to D relationship in scroll to motto is wrong for 103.)
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Just added to the 1827 thread...
    O-112
    O-127
    O-141

Also, although included in above list 129, 130, and 137 are already shown.

Note to self. BREAK DOWN AND BUY A CAMERA! Then you can actually take your own pics rather than only posting seller's.

Thanks for the help. My spreadsheet for marriages already listed was corrupted some time ago. When I went through every thread and did it all over, I must have missed these three. There may be others I missed, but likely not.

    I agree with you on stman's O-108.

Sadly, I was not able to manage collecting the Draped Bust Half Dollar series. If enough of us prod Slumlord98 to start it, maybe he will. He certainly would do a fine job.

Thanks to our new boy on the block, edmerlr, we have completed at least one marriage of 1808, 1809, 1810, 1814, and 1820. Wow!image

If you are interested in Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollars, listen to what Ed says about them, and study his pictures. He is one of a small group seriously collecting CBHs by die state, and he is willing to share them with us. Welcome edmerlr.image

And let me also reiterate a thanks to you too Mozin for ALL your contributions and hard work---ALL those varieties you have been posting have been enjoyed also.

Edmerie-----I, for one, would be VERY interested in seeing different die states of many of the varieties in the CBH series.

Thanks to SomeGuyFromMichigan, who specializes in the 1827 mint year Bust Halves, we now need fewer 1827 marriages than 1828. Only 13 missing 1827 marriages, out of 49 minted for the year. image

Don't have any missing varieties but i think this series of threads is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) thread series ever created on this forum. A huge number of experts has contributed to these threads and have led to a couple new collectors of this series, including me. It is truly an addicting series and i want to thank the people (esp. mozin for keeping up this series of threads) who made these possible and such a huge success!

Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

    NOTICE

Due to many requests, I have expanded this Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar series to include all recognized Overton die states. Please refer to the thread introduction for current information.

Thanks to everyone who has helped this continuing series to be such a huge success. Remember, we want you to show your coins even if others have already shown your die states. Duplicates are fine.

I have updated this thread to include the most current Bust Half Nut Club information as to die states that are believed to exist. Only two die states are still in question, and they have been noted as such. Note also that some of the die state information may be different than what is shown in the Parsley Overton fourth edition.

Special thanks to Edmerlr for his efforts in steering me in the expansion of this Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar series to include all die states. He now has me looking for die states, after over 35 years of collecting Bust Halves without much concern for die states.image

Remember, we want to see your Busties even though their marriage die state has already been shown.image

We now have 144 CU members that have contributed to our Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar series. It has been six weeks since the last missing marriage has been posted. Looks like all of us with extensive collections have shown all the marriages and die states that we have.

Time to show more Busties! Remember, we want lots of duplicates shown. We would like to keep this series alive for a very long time.image

I just updated the start of this thread with current rarity ratings for the missing die states. Note that some of the rarity numbers are followed by a question mark, meaning they are best guesses for rarity.

There are many common die states still not shown. Show those Busties.image

  • Is anyone going to finish posting the DBH series? All we have left to post is the 1806 and 1807 and we will have threads started for all of the Heraldic eagle reverse halves.image

I will cover the 1806 Kyle.
