Sorry for another eBay scammer thread...

but this is one for the list if you care to add them.

This guy hit the BIN on this item Link and sent
a personal check by Fedex 3 days after the auction. The zero feedback (when he
won my auction) on a big ticket item of course sent out the "Danger Will Robinson" signal,
but everyone has to start somewhere so I deposited the check immediately.

I received an email from the buyer about 7 business days after I deposited the check
stating that it had cleared his account. My bank doesn't withhold funds on checks
because of my balance so I called them and they told me to give it at least 10
business days to clear.

The 13th business day I sent the package Registered Mail. The 14th day a chargeback
was posted to my account.image The reason was an "Invalid Account". I called the Postal
Inspector office and informed them of the situation and they said to fill out form PS1509
and take it to the PO asp. REMEMBER this one! I got my package back in 2 days!

The authorities and ebay are now investigating but he's still active.

I still think eBay is a good venue for some transactions but buyers and sellers alike
need to be educated and careful of who they are dealing with.

13 business days before it was returned?

Your bank would have owed you the money had you gotten stuck.

What does PDJ mean in the feedback he left for you?

Glad it turned out ok for you.

  • Two things: (1) I always call the bank and do a check verification - some will verify funds, some won't (some are touch tone info), all I've come across will verify if an account is valid and/or open with no Neg. balance. (2) It may be different now... but - in the mid-90's I had a bank (for the business that I had previously worked for & had closed) send back previously deposited/cashed payroll checks (from 6-9 months before) as NSF, and my bank withdrew the funds, submitted them to the payer bank & put me in a neg. balance. I had a fit about it being past the cleared funds time (by many, many months) and I was informed that there is actually NO limit on how long a bank can wait before rejecting a check as NSF - that it's simply up to the banks how they want to do business with each other, and what time frame they'll allow. I ended up getting a personal loan to repay my bank over $6,000.00 - and changed banks.

For an account to be declared 'invalid' means that it has been closed for more then a year or was never an acct. to begin with.

    ?

    WTF does PDJ mean?

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • The back is never on the hook if you endorse the check. (Endorse means YOU guarantee the check.)

If the banks were ever at risk for NSF checks, everything would be instant and electronic insted of 19th-century.

You can deposit a check without endorsing it. The tellers are trained to hassle the daylights out of you, but you are NOT required to endorse a check for deposit. Just put "For Deposit" where you might otherwise sign the back.

I never endorse checks unless depositing at the counter and then the tellers MAKE me do it.
