A Grading Help Post...Thanks! 1890-CC Morgan & $2.5 1927 Indian

I recently bought these coins from a private collection and probably (due to my own lack of skill) paid too much for the at least the Morgan. It looks cleaned to me but at the same time very close to MS.

The indian looks pretty good in hand and the pictures I took of both coins are not the best. I hope I attached these right image

Thanks!

2.5 is prob cleaned on the reverse. i see too many lines going
the same way. so net AU.

the morgan is a dog.. bow wow. melt value. unless that CC
mint mark or date gives it a value i dont realize.
  • The Morgan was definately cleaned. I am sorry about the pictures. Shrinking them down to under 50kb really impacts the look.

This was my first "picture" post, so I am learning and my camera is not set up. Both coins looks better in hand. I think I suckered myself on the Morgan.

    Thanks for your input!

Don't feel so bad. The first few times I tried buying from private parties (to buy at "dealer" levels) I got snookered. You think you have the first shot and you know more than the seller. Sometimes you don't. The risk of letting a good deal possibly get away gets the best of us.

    Like the indian. No morgan.image
  • Well, I am debating about sending the Indian to PCGS. The Morgan, I don't know what do with it. It really does look better in hand than that picture. I am working on getting the obverse on. It does look cleaned though and my guess is I should probably send it off to ANACs to see what is what lol.

sending that gold coins to ANACs would be a smart move in my
opinion. at least it will come back slabbed in something and wisen
you up to the reason why it may or may not BB at PCGS.

if you are at the learning stage, sending a coin or two to ANACs
    would be fun.
  • That is my thought process as well. I have been very fortunate as a newbie to get in on the 2006W 3-Coin Gold Set (sold it) and several of the 2006-W Silver Sets. So I have financially done well there and my goal was to target a couple series of coins to collect personally. I find the Indian's very appealing and wanted to start to learn about them.

So far I have sent coins into both NGC and PCGS, learning about the services. There is SO MUCH learning in this hobby but I not deterred at all. I find that the fun part! I used the 2006 Mint issues to learn about the grading services, market pricing, ebay aspects, and managed to make money (although collecting something I am passionate about is my long term goal). So time to try out ANACs and maximize my error for learning purposes image.

I am also learning that taking photos of coins is a pain in the rump! I tried to take another one of the obverse but the loss of detail is disappointing!
