How did this pink 1953D MS65FBL get in PCGS holder?

I always though PINK on a silver coin was definitely AT and would get bb'd by PCGS.

  • that one actually looks NT. You shouldn'y always presume that pink toned coins are AT--sometimes coins tone wierd colors natually
  • Seller has a lot of pink coins in PCGS slabs....Looks like someone upchucked on his coin collection

Learn something new about market acceptability all the time.

Is it kind of disturbing to see a seller like this with lots of toned Morgans?

And who's Mike L? "C'mon Mike L, buy it, you know you want it."

Now here's the thing, if I comment no doubt it will be a board member's coins then I'll be in trouble.image

  • That IS a board member's stuff, dontcha know! Some cool looking coins (I think).
  • Why not just ask the seller. He is here among us. AKA Pharmer. Personally I like coin. NT if you ask me.

Here is what I really think, I'm no photographer...... but I believe the pink tint is from using a reveal bulb for lighting.

if the person is a board member he should know potential buyers
may want to see the obverse image

i think the coin is AT and a PCGS slab does not change my mind.
a previous owner purposely put that coin around something to
    tone it.

sorry Pharmer, but you should let the HepKitty image a Frankie or two of yours!

Colors like that are not unheard of on a Franklin/Mint set toner....

although that type of color is rather scarce as most tend to tone really drab, dull and lifeless, especially the mint sets from 1953.

    As for AT or NT....

I would have to see this one and get up close and personal with it before I make a judgement.

From what I can tell, I like that piece.......

Bingo! That explains why that shade of pink shows up on so many of his coins.
I'd love to see a picture of this coin taken by Lucy.........I'll bet it's a stunner. image

airedale, that is a fun fun link. slabs everywhere, the color blinded me.
  • Mike L would be bUBBAH/ supercarcoins. (Who just bought a very expensive colorful 53-D from Peacok coins)

You have to wonder about Pharmers coins... so many have a similar look that would indicate AT. Some of the similarity can be explained by his poor photography & lighting (not that my photo skills are any better!), but I have little doubt he doctors as well.

The good thing is... Pharmer/Duffdaddy overprices his stuff so exorbitantly that few people will ever get suckered!

Didn't you post a comparison of two sets of photos of a Franklin half from Pharmer a while back? I thought I remembered that...
  • Yes Rex, your memory is good.

Unfortunately, I just tossed those pix last week.image

To be fair tho', I should point out that the majority of voters in that thread felt that Pharmers coin was au naturale. (FOOLS!)

I agree, seems to be in all their coins. Marketing ploy for those wanting LSD flashback coins! Differing white balances and exposure characteristics give different "colors" to the coins.

It only takes one sale of a world finest roosie to come out looking real peachy with the initial investment.

I think that each of us has our own "photo style". This is due to our cameras and our lighting. I do not think for a minute that Pharmer plays any games with AT coins. Look at the persons pics as a whole and you can compensate for what the coin will look like in hand. My pics are taken with a reveal and an OTT bulb and my pics tend to overestimate the greens in my toned coins. Are those greens there--yes, but at some angles you see them less. Pharmers pics are consistent because of his setup and once you get to understand that you can know what the coin will look like in hand. Take the same toned coin and 10 of us will end up with different pics--some good, some bad and some ridiculous.
We don't all have mgoodm3's set-up or ability.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

To those of you who think there aren't legitimately toned "pink" Franklins, you probably just haven't seen enough mint set toned coins of that era as they aren't common but there are many out there. I specifically picked up this coin, slabbed by NGC to add to my toned collection of Franklins. This is exactly how the coin looks in person.

    image
  • the image was not realistic colorwise ; thats why it looked like phony toning and was brought into question .
  • I think the fact Lucy has this coin in hand and took accurate pics settles this.. NT all the way, poor orginal pic.

  • Irishmike....that is not showing up as pink on my monitor...white balance/lighting prolly the culprit.
