Fun night at antique auction - few rips inside (Boyd's Battery)

Local antique auction didn't have many coins and not any specifically advertised as they were mostly held back for the special coin auction next weekend, so I think most of the coin people stayed away. Bought a few antiques for the house, and picked up these in addition to a Canadian mint set with some nice color, but I'll post that on the world forum.

Nothing spectacular, but for $6 for all 4, wasn't too shabby - the Barber is a 1900-S

This is my favorite. This was in a box with some other misc "Crap" and I got the box for $12.00 I then went over to the underbidder and said this was all I wanted and would sell the rest back to them for the $11 they quit bidding on. So this cost me $1.00. In a VERY strange twist of fate, today I went to the Niagara Falls coin show and bought an older Krause US Tokens (1700-1900) book on closeout for $10.00. When I got home before heading to the auction I took off the plastic and flipped a few pages and one of the pages I stopped on was Boyd's Battery. I remembered Brandon showed one awhile back. 20 minutes later as I'm going through the lots and saw this in a box of junk I about Elmo'd myself - talk about coincidence. It's a Rulau NY-NY 33. The Krause lists it at $80 in VF, and an eBay search shows that is pretty much right on with reality at the moment.

I also got two of these for $1.00 - nothing special, but since I don't have a scale yet, takes out the guessing for junior's whitman album.

    Cool. Where's the auction?
In what seems like the middle of nowhere between Buffalo, NY & Erie, PA.

Yes, some times you get lucky, but there are some days they would have bid the 4 halves to $50 too, so it's not always this easy image

Cool find. I looked at a couple of Boyd's batteries at the Charlotte ANA show. The dealer wanted something like $65 or so for one of them and a bit more for the other (I can't remember the exact amounts) that was in slightly better shape. He had one copy of the original paperwork that came with them and he was going to include it if I bought one of them. I passed, mainly because I had just bought a few nice So-Called Dolars off of him and I didn't want to spend too much but also because I didn't know what the price should be. Sooner or later I'll end up getting one. I think they are really cool.

If you send the Boyd's to NGC they will slab it!image BTW, nice pick up!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Nice little pickups. For me, there is always more satisfaction in getting a good deal on some $5 and $10 than there is in buying a 4 figure coin.

Excellent rip. That's way nicer than a VF. If you send it to NGC, I wouldn't be surprised if you get it back in an MS holder.
