Wow, I think it should be without qualifier...be it an 8 or a 9. I think it looks better than a straight 7 (the downgrade for the qualifier)

How's the centering on the back?

  • Options
Top to bottom isn't centered. But dang It's not that bad.
  • Options
The back is around 80/20. Whatever happened to the eye appeal aspect????????????

It's better than an 8 for sure. Should be 8.5. C'mon PSA. Add the half points to your scale.........

NO biggie, just crack and resubmit if you want the 8. Graders are like Democrats on the war --- they'll change their minds!!

It's OC from top to bottom. The card itself is probably very sharp, hence the 9 - but it's not centered well enough for a straight 9.

I would send it in at least 3 more times. I would bet you could get it through once w/o a qualifier.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

I do realize it's not perfectly centered. I just don't feel it should have been given an o/c qualifier. This card is much sweeter than the scan shows.

I have two of them so one will be cracked out (at some point) and put in a 1" shiny new screwdown for the raw collection.

    Now this one is O/C..........

No way should this card be an o/c. I think the grader should have his eyes checked. You need to have it regraded it should be an 8 nq

That's an o/c Munson all day. Looks like 75/25 t-b to me without measuring it. Still a very nice looking card I wouldn't mind owning myself. I could care less if it was given the kiss of death qualifier. It has tremendous eye appeal (with slight off centering) and that's what really counts. I think the best it would grade without a qualifier would be PSA 7.

To get an 8 it has to be 65/35 or better. Don't believe the 'up to 70/30' line in the grade descriptions psa gives. I have stacks of examples here that should be 8's with 70/30 to slightly better t-b centering but they are residing in 7 holders. I talked with PSA about this published standard for the straight 8 grade and it all boils down to 'eye appeal'. In other words a grading loophole.

A straight 8 requires no worse than 70/30 centering. That is 75/25 top to bottom. From an eye appeal factor, its actually worse IMO because the bottom part of the arch looks like it's so far away from the top of the card. If you don't look at the bottom border initially, that card looks termendously off center, it's only once you see the bottom border that you realize it's not nearly as bad as it does on first glance. I think a 9OC is about as good as you're going to do with it. It's a gorgeous card, but I don't see any way you'd get it in an NQ 9 holder, and a straight 8 is going to be a sell as well. If you have a chance to see PSA at a local show, you can try your salesmanship skills and see what you can do.

Sharp looking card from a very popular set. Not to mention a fan favorite in Munson....but technically it's not a 9 and deserved the OC.

    Terrific card either way.

I had a snipe on that card to hit with 5 secs left, it never went off. His IA card was a much nicer 9 but the s/s centering was too hard on the eyes. Nice buy.

Centering must be approximately 60/40 to 65/35 on front and 90/10 or better on the reverse. It just misses. After looking at my 72 Topps MINT 9 Munson I can see what you are talking about. Ishould be an 8.5 only due to centering. The card is as sharp as can be for an OPC.

Maybe I'll put it in a PRO holder and get a GEM MINT. image

    Hey Steve,

quit being a hypocrite and criticize others, including those who have their "political views" pasted in their signature. Oh wait, that would be the right/consistent thing to do.

P.S. Mine wasn't an opinion, it is a statement of fact. Grow up.

    JimQ,
I had my eye on the Munson IA also but side to side was horrible. Yuck. I thought this one was a good buy. The first one I purchased I paid a lot for it though. This one brought the cost average down. It's still a tough card as most early OPC stuff is.
