[rant on]Why can't people take better pics?

Rob85635Rob85635 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭
C'mon, if you are going to advertise a coin that is missing a mint mark due to a polished die, would you not provide MUCH MUCH better pictures than this? Neat if it's a good example of that particular polished die, but bidding is over $100 and no way I would consider it without better pictures.

Auction

This is not a rant about just this auction, I cannot tell you how many auctions looked good with AWEFUL pics. People could realize a much better profit if they would only provide better pictures. ESPECIALLY on higher priced coins.

Evidently there are bidders who are willing to bid regardless of the picture quality but I agree with you. They will spend more time on large fonts, colorful fonts, flowery language and such but then post a crappy picture. There are obviously buyers that don't seem to mind though as is evident by the bids on that Lincoln.

Example of a pic i took
Here is one of my pics. But I must respectfully ask maam, what difference does it make what kinda pictures I take. I am talking about sellers on Ebay. Do you not think they should take better pictures maam? image

How many people are willing to spend over 500 dollars for a camera that has a macro lens and then get the proper lighting?

sometimes, bad pictures are intentional with ebay sellers.

I bet you put that though photo shop and it will reveal more than presently exist. Sometimes it's on purpose and sometimes for those doing a little work and taking a little risk can pay big rewards. That piture is at least somewhat in focus the rip-offs make them real fuzzy most of the time.

I ask myself that all the time. To maximize the potential of a coin good pics are a must.

Well, that 22 "no D" is clearly not the Die Par 2 version irregardless if it's real or not.

My camera was $300, has a macro lens, and takes much better photos than this. My camera can now be had used for about $100. I have several cameras, ranging from $35 to $900, and each one takes better photos than this ebay listing. It's a myth that you need a $500 camera to photograph a coin. Sure, for some of the pros on here perfecting their photography as an art form it may very well be required, but to take a clear, large photo of a coin it is not. Lighting has more to do with it than lenses. In any event, you've got 3 and 4 megapixel cameras for under $100 now. Not too much to ask that a photo be clear on an ebay auction, imo.

I agree the pic sux. Further, I would not part with +$100 for a coin sight unseen based on a sucky eBay pic. I've learned my lesson from similar eBay auctions with crappy pix and overblown hyperbole. "Fool me once shame on... shame on you....fool me....you can't get fooled again!"

This coin is junk...I had the same idea...Just fix it in a photoprogram to at least see some of the details. Whoever is bidding on this one is gonna be sorry.
  • I just whipped out my $100 (used price) camera and snapped a pic of some commemorative I had laying around. It's a Casio Exilim, 5 megapixel. 1 ott lamp, and that's it. First try. Not an award winning photograph but anyone can afford this camera now, and there are hundreds of other digital cameras as good or better for less money, so there's really no excuse.

Most lousy photographs are done intentionally, to hide something.

I wouldn't buy this coin raw on ebay. This coin raw has a high likelyhood of having a rubbed off D.

    You don't need megapixels. This...

    image

was taken with a Sony Mavica. 20 pictures to a 1.44MB floppy disk.
  • Thanks spudhead, I have a friend that still uses a mavica. He bought that camera on ebay for $20. You can take decent, accurate photos on any camera, and I agree with the other poster that blurred, horrible pictures are 99% of the time intentional to hide something. There are a few people who are inept with the camera but even they can take better photos (than on this auction), or have someone do it for them, or wait until they can before they list something of value.
