I need to get excited for the Santa Clara show. I've been to three so far and never found an 82 P I liked!

Did you make it there? SFDukie and I were hanging out for a while, and we were looking for you. I had to take off around 2:00, tho'...

I still can't post pictures but will describe my best. I looked for a nice 1982-P in
pocket change back in 1982. I finally got a couple in change at the licence bureau
in East Chicago, Indiana in about August. They did their banking down the street
so I went straight there to get a bag. The vault manager was simply astounded to
find I wanted the bag to set aside for speculation. He said he had never heard of
such a thing and conversed extensively with other vault managers.

The hunch paid off and the bag contained mostly seven different runs of pretty nice
coins with several oddball short runs. Of the seven three were simply not that nice.
They were better than what you'd expect to see but they were struck obliquely and
the dies had seen better days. Another three runs were better from newer dies but
one was a little weak, one was off center, and the third was a little late in the die's
life. But the 7th was something to behold and the same die pair as I had recieved at
the licence bureau. There were about 400 coins spread between the 3000th and 12,
000th strike of a nice brand new well adjusted die. Virtually all were well struck though
just a little weak around 10 O'Clock. Some of these had caught hell in the handling but
most were as pristine as you could expect in a bag.

Near the end of the bag I caught a break and a big fluke; there was somehow one of
the first strikes off this die and cleaner than most of the others. I'd grade it MS-65 even
without the bump they get for being a tough date.

Despite years of intensive search I've never found another that can even approach it,
though there are a few that are better struck or more attractive (Like DHeath's coin).
If you like early die state on a well struck coin there is possibly none finer.

Wow, thanks for the story! It causes me to lose hope, but it's still a good story. image I'm very familiar with the Dheath quarter. It's probably the most excited I've ever gotten seeing clad before. I think the first time I saw it I just started cursing.

There are some more nice coins out there but you have to get there first.

The problem with the '82-P is that they are virtually unknown as gems in
the most commonly encounted forms. There are precious few rolls and it
would be most surprising to find a gem from this source even if you could
find a lot of rolls. The souvenir sets which sometimes provide gem '83-P's
are not a viable source. There are very few really nice coins in these sets
and perhaps no true gems whatsoever.

The only two sources may be the Numis News sets and the large flat pack
manilla envelope mint sets. The latter coins are frequently destroyed by
tarnish. The Paul and Judy mint sets will turn up a lot of nice choice coins
but I've never seen a gem in them.

I've turned up a few nice coins by beating the bushes but this would be
prohibitively expensive now days. The best bet is probably the mint sets
and keeping an eye on eBay. Dealer's stock is always a possibility and it
would be a very inexpensive way to find one.

This one's not particularly nice, but it is PL, so it's a hint at what is possible. image The D on the left is for contrast.
