Your best circulation find in the past 10 years

I always love to hear stories of people who make great circulation finds. Let me hear yours!

Here's mine: this past fall I found a 1972 Type 1 DDO Lincoln in AU58 on the floor of a local library--just lying on the ground as so many discarded pennies do. I almost didn't pick it up!

A 1972 DDO Type 1 that slabbed as a 63 Red by PCGS.
Close would be the equivalent of about 3 rolls of 1999 Wide AM cents from a box.
  • You've got to be kidding:-) It's tough to pick one! Seriously though, this came out of a roll of dimes:-) Edward II Silver Penny

    AU 1955 Lincoln. How standard!
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.
  • Went down to the western union store to send a money order, paid for the mo and lo and behold a 1915 buffalo nickel that looked great was given in change. I quickly pocketed it trying to look casual. Bet that cleck wondered what hell made me attack my change like that.image

Clerk at a store had her kids in the store and was busy with them for quite a few minutes while I was patiently waiting for someone to ring up my sale. After about three minutes she noticed me, and felt guilty about it, and pulled out a 1956 wheat cent that she had tucked away. The clerk said, look, this is old, worth money. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was worth a nickel at most, but still made up for being away from her station.

I generally don't look at my change, so an odd wheat penny here or there is about all I sniff out.

The other day I was standing at the register waiting for my change and just happened to look into the leae a penny take a penny tray and there was a wheatie I took it out and left a nickel so I didn't feel bad. It is a 1948 S with the L in Liberty just a blob. And it is about an AU 55.
  • I found a 1918-S Mercury Dime in Good condition in a roll of dimes at work.

PM sent. Best circulation find actually were several Mint State Wide AM, 1998 & 2000. No 1999 though! image

I have found some fairly good but not amazing stuff in change over the years, but nothing worth mentioning in the past decade. image

The best stuff I ever got was back when I started collecting the mid-60s.

As everyone who ever cracked a roll from that era remembers, you would get an Indian Head once every roll, several Buffalos in every nickel roll, and one to five Mercs in every dime roll.

And all the dimes were silver, too :-))

We found a 1914-D cent in one roll.

The best stuff in recent (<2 years) memory is a 1960 dime from a bank, a 1958 quarter in change at my FAVORITE burger joint (In 'N Out), and a 1921 Walker that a relative of mine got while she was clerking at a supermarket. This amazing thing must have been the result of the sad old "kid stealing from grampa's collection" syndrome.

    1964-D Jefferson nickel in F12.

But seriously, a common circulated silver roosevelt dime from a vending machine.

Haven't found anything particularly great over the past decade. The occasional silver quarter or dime, early Jeff, yawn-dated wheatie, a handful of potential doubled mintmarks or date digit Lincolns. Think I may have gotten one or two Buffalo nickels in that period.

  • Two weeks ago my mother called after finding a 1948 quarter. Just got it this last weekend and its a '48S in XF condition. A few years ago I found an 1864 IHC in my change, well worn but still really cool to find something that old with a ton of history floating around.
First get the knowledge, then the coins.

I work at a bank so this may be cheating but a couple months ago I found 3 1923 Peace Dollars along with $11.00 face of 90% silver halves (Walking Liberty, Franklin, and Kennedy) in the coin machine.

I bought two Penn. rolls of quarters from the bank. Six months later, they hit $40 a roll. I couldnt stand it any more. At the time, that was the price of silver. I sold both rolls.

In the last ten years I've found dozens of rare and potentially
very valuable coins in circulation. Very few have much current
value and are just things like a double cudded 1983-P quarter,
1998 close AM cent, and '95 DDO cent.

But the number of coins that are likely to have a lot of value in
the future are much more easily found. These include things
like a 1985-P sm bust 25c in a very attractive well made AU and
    a 1978-D type "d" reverse 25c in XF+. I've found the '68 DDO
    dime which is very underrated.

I've also found a lot of satisfaction in finds of high grade new
coins and high grade circulated older coins. Most of these pro-
bably won't be worth much even in the more distant future but
they are a hoot to find and collect. I've found many hundreds
    of these.

And for those who think there's nothing in circulation of any val-
ue consider that in 1958 I did far worse. I not only never found
anything of current value but I never found anything that might
have much value in the future. In those days I had no interest
in or knowledge of high grades and varieties though.

  • 1)Bought a roll of Ikes and got a few Morgans, comkon date which I later traded. (This was in 1978)

    2)A blank Planchet (penny)

    3)2 off center strikes (penny)

    4)Franklin Half

5)20 dollar gold certificate which I sold to pay the rent

Oh yeah, the endless wheats you get with pennies. Including a 1909 s NON VDB.

    1923-S Mercury Dime
  • About 10 years ago, I went for a little silver hunt. Turned up about three rolls of 40% silver plus one 1964 half.

None of them are really worth anything, they were just surprising.

2002 D Sacagawea dollar (From a postal vending machine)
1937-D Buffalo nickel, XF40. (From a hospital gift shop)
