Just picked up a nice 1850 Large Cent - Grade Opinions / Population Report?

Hi guys and gals,

I recently started a collection of large cents and picked this one up today. I'm curious what you all think the coin will grade. Any opinions or comments are most welcome.

Lastly if anyone could post a population report for me it would be much appreciated!

Thanks all!

Sorry for the poor pic quality, I'll get better pics when it arrives.

Looks like great detail but can't possibly grade because of the pictures (at least I can't)

AU55 details but possibly cleaned and retoned.

Seems a bit crisper then AU55 to me. Anyone else?

I think it's about AU-55. There looks to be a touch of wear noticeable on the bow and wreath on the reverse. Something seems odd with the color though. The coin seems to be darker on the field areas right next to the devices, like the darker areas around the stars.

My guess would be 55 as well- and the print would drive me nuts...

Kinda looks like a rather large fingerprint on the obverse.

  • Will the "bn" line paste on it's own with respective grades? I can't imagine this would grade a "rb" or "rd"

.... and thank you very much!

  • Don't bother with the pop reports. They are of absolutely no value with early coppers, especially circulated late dates. Most coppers are not slabbed. Identify the variety and determine the rarity and value from the Noyes or Robinson (CRQ) price guides. The coin has nice detail, but it's been cleaned and retoned and would net grade lower by EAC standards. If you like the late dates, and have a more than passing interest in large cents, get yourself Grellman atttribution guide and learn how to attribute these coins.

Good luck with your large cent collecting
  • Thank you. I see I have a lot more to learn. This coin was represented to me as a much higher grade and I fell in the trap.

  • You were probably sold the coin based on the sharpness grade only. The net grade determines the value by EAC standards. Net grade is the sharpness grade less grade points for problems, if any. Excessive marks, cleaning, recoloring, corrosion, damage, etc., lowers the net grade. You have a nicely detailed cent, there is wear on the high points. Check out uscents.com for a decent grading guide to assist you with the braided hair cents. Cleaning and recoloring will net the grade 5-10 points down IMO, or more in obvious and poorly done cases. Except for rare varieties, your late dates can typically be found in high grades and condition. So look always for the quality and good color here.
  • 1798CentCollector thank you!

  • No problem. This is a fascinating and rewarding area of study and collecting to pursue - and with many opportunities. Good luck
