It kind of burns my butt...........

I started this thread about a comment I made in another thread........

It kind of burns my butt that people think that they have to depend on a TPG to tell them what a coin is or isn't...... If you're spending the money, you better know for yourself what you're buying........ image

Editted to add......... If you've ever seen my butt, you'd know it would be more of a bonfire than a campfire image

It burns my butt even more that people play nefarious games with coins so much that the non-expert collector feels compelled to rely on a second opinion by the TPGs.

  • It never ceases to amaze me when I learn (yet again) that many collectors cannot grade coins. For them the TPG firms are essential....and gospel.....

I must say that I am guilty of at least doing a little burning. Sometimes, I believe the motivations to buy coins can sometimes cloud the judgement of sane people who know better.

It sort of burns my butt that people play nefarious games with coins such that the non-expert collector feels compelled to not fully rely on the expert opinion of the TPGs. image

Oops, is training people to not rely on TPGs a good thing? If so, I can put out the fire image

    Jim,

I totally agree. Especially when it comes to varieties because I've seen a lot of misattributed coins in the TPG holders.

You guys will just have to wait until I get it in the mail. image
  • My thought is that on a scarce or rare coin, I want a reputable TPG to look at it to authenticate it. The grade is important but I want to know if a 1909 S VDB is an outstanding die struck copy (they do exist) or the real thing. I am hoping that placing a coin in front of a few PCGS graders will give me a better range of opinions on a coins authenticity. This is a particular concern with respect to Gold pieces as I would be the first to tell you that I am not an expert on them.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Ditto!

If I'm going to spend mucho bucks on a coin I'm going to do everything I possibly can in my power, to insure that I'm getting what the seller is claiming he/she has. A TPG now adays is a prerequisite for me before I make a purchase. This to me is a no brainer. There may be a few extenuating circumstances where
I'll deviate from this, but they are very few and far away.

Seriously, what is the big deal about using a TPG? Certainly one should buy the coin and not the holder, but TPG's have a role in numismatics.
