Coin Collectors in America 30% ?

Last evening, while listening to Michael Savage on the radio he mentioned that 30% of Americans collect coins. Albeit he was hawking Swiss America or some such gold selling company but I find that number incredibly high!

That is the figure thrown around most often. The Mint reports 136 million Americans are collecting coins, using the current population of just over 300 million, it is about right.

If you include people who just set aside some state quarters and fill our pennyboards, I'm not surprised.

My mother-in-law hoarded all the bicentennial coins she found. Never did anything with them -- just tossed 'em in a big bin. If that sort of thing is included in the 30% figure, then I could believe it (even though I think of that more as "hoarding" rather than collecting).

Depends on how you define the word "collect". Some people have set aside a Kennedy half dollar or a few state quarters as a
"curiousity" type item but whether you can classify them as a "coin collector" is open to interpretation. I have a few baseball cards
throw in a box somewhere, I don't even remember where they came from, I certainly don't consider myself a "baseball card collector".

image I've had a sparkletts bottle that I've been dumping pennies into for almost 30 years, but I only consider that I have been colecting coins for 7 years 11 months!

Next month will be the 8 year aniversary of the first coin I bought for my collection a 1999 proof ASE's image
  • That 136 million figure counts everyone who collects like we do, everyone who has put aside a few state quarters, and everyone who tosses their extra change into a dish, jar box etc every night. Actual serious collectors who are willing to pay a significant premium for a specific coin they need is probably closer to 2 million.
