Won't dipping it take all the toning off?

I am not sure what is worse removing the toning or keeping the fingerprint.

The coin is currently up for auction by Heritage in the Central States Signature Auction in St. Louis.

Overgrading happens at both PCGS and NGC. If a coin is submitted to PCGS or NGC by a huge place like Heritage, you can expect an extra point, maybe even two occasionally.

Judging from the 6 digit S/N it doesn't seem to be a recent submission. I have not a clue as to whether Heritage was the submitter.

Possibly the fingerprint magically appeared after the coin was plasticized?

I believe Calleigh Duquesne could run that print through the CSI database and come up with the perp . . . . . .

They pried it from some dead guys cold hard grip.

    Then they graded it.

    Then they sold it.

I haven't looked at it yet, but isn't there also one on the big colourful Morgan that graces the cover of the current Superior Santa Clara catalogue?

Maybe they searced their database and discovered it was Walter Breen's print, so they didn't downgrade it? image

UMMM no; what do you think it is? Technically it looks to be a thumbprint.

I bet if you dip it and regrade, it does not grade close to a MS67. I would try no more than a cross to PCGS. Keep it in the MS67 plastic.

  • I have seen "bag" toning like that.

  • << <i>Where'd it come from? >>

Probably when NGC pressed it into the holder.

Serious question: Why is bag toning better than fingerprint toning?

I think the toning is too dark to dip off. You would most likely have to dip the coin too long and render it lifeless.
