Large Cents on Ebay

I was just looking on ebay at their large cent listings and was noticing that there are very few large cents on there of any quality at all. I'm sure that most on here are already aware of this and may think "Tell me something I don't already know," but I was just suprised that nice cent seemed nearly completely unavailable on ebay. Most are corroded, damaged, or have very poor color. Some of the genuinely nice ones seem to be overgraded. I do not even mind low grade examples, as long as they have nice color and are undamaged. These also seem tough to locate on there.

I try to buy some nice looking large cents when I see them because I do not often see them. However, my search on ebay made me think that I should buy every nice looking one I come across.

Just an observation on my part.

hey short gap....

theres a coin dealer who usually attends the cental states coin show....anyway he deal mostly in large cents and has an inventory that is just awesome!

maybe someone here knows who i'm refering to...his stuff is mostly raw, but in high grades.

also i remember that his coins have yellow identification paper thats cut to fit inside of the clear flips he uses. (has he date & variety on it.)

I agree with that. I've been collecting Large Cents off and on for few years now and when I started I could find nice coins in VG to VF condition with nice planchets and color fairly easy. But lately nice lower grade coins seem to have disappeared. About the only place to find them is from dealers that specialize in them. And the Prices have went through the roof.

Every thing cleaned, corroded, scratched or damaged !

I don't even bother with ebay anymore when I'm looking for large cents. As you've said, it's all garbage. I've had better luck finding nicer LCs at Heritage, my local coin dealer occasionally, coin shows, and online dealers.

There's a lot of poor quality copper out there - as you would expect there to be with early coppers. Ebay is not the place to find quality material en masse - you have to seek out the dealers and venues where the nicer copper will be offered up. Copper dealers, specialist collectors, and auctions where copper collections are consigned, are your best bets - and you will find a good supply. The nicer high grade/ condition stuff disappers quickly and for long periods of time. The inferior copper recirculates. The auction houses don't always have nice stuff consigned to offer when copper collection or group of coppers is not being consigned. There is good copper to be had - yo just have to look in the right places.

Tom Reynolds is the guy -- the yellow envelopes, quality, and nice stuff fits his inventory. Other copper dealers with nice stuff would be Doug Bird, Chris McCawley, and Jim McGuigan. Shawn Yancey's inventory has been getting better over the last year, and he generally has some nice G-F pieces. Finding nice VG-VF copper is really getting tough -- one should probably buy any that they see. E-Bay stuff is pretty much poor quality but before major auctions some of the EAC guy's try to build a war chest by selling there. I bought a couple of pretty nice f-F15 pieces right before the Riever sale.
