If the exchange rate prices you out of the market, you should never have been in the market in the first place.

Look at it this way. With all the great coins out there, you should certainly be able to find many things that are worth way more to you than they actually cost. So if all prices go up 5 or 10 or even 20 percent, you should still be a buyer. He11, prices could triple across the board and I'd still be buying most of what I'm now collecting.

When I see a coin I really want for my collection, I'll buy it even if I pay a little more than I would like. I plan on owning them for a long time.

Actually, I look at it as a foreign currency play which has no stress. Buy a little here, a little there, and be ready to sieze the day when that ultra slamma-jamma gem-aroo PF Gothic crown comes a courtin', or maybe an 1847 superb gem crown which Mrs. MacPherson handed down as a wedding gift from daughter to daughter for 7 generations....encased in a perfect floating 22kt glass fob.....shimmering, mega-strike.....untouched by any of the goofy daughters.....................until one finally sells it.................TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For £1000.

Pity she didn't know the market price of these bits.

Oh, OK! I'd be a sport a pay up to £3000.

Good, less competition for me from other buyers from this side of the pond. I already have a big advantage over a lot of the bidders over there, I don't have to pay the 17% VAT that they do since in my case it's being shipped out of the country. Even if they are dealers and don't have to pay it, they have to consider that their customers WILL have to pay it so they have to be able to buy it lower.

Interesting comments above. I quite agree that if a coin is especially rare and a desirable specimen that a change of 5 or 10% is not too bad while a change of 100% or more would be bad. I have gotten a few coins at very good prices that would have been good prices even with a rise in exchange rates....

The increase is not such much the strength of the £, but a weakening the US$, other currencies have risen against the US$ as well, for example the AUD$ is at a 20yr high against the $ but about the same against the Yen and £.

Yes, in fact the pound itself (and the Euro) are also weak but not as weak. Check and see how much a pound will buy in merry olde englande!
