Type 2 SBA?

Can someone tell the difference between the type 1 and type 2 ? I just got a 1981 - S proof set and there is a large difference in value.

Do a forum search, I'm sure there are pictures of both here.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

When searching, make sure you check the forum boxes you want to search.

Took me awhile to learn how to use it the first time too. image

    I hope this will help.

Since this has come up a few times in various forums, here's an excerpt from an e-mail I sent to BJ by request of a board member a couple days ago. Hope this helps clear things up, particularly for PCGS type set collectors.

Numbers before the date are the PCGS coin numbers.

    ---------

    NARROW RIM:

    9571 - 1979-P SBA$ MS
    9572 - 1979-D SBA$ MS
    9573 - 1979-S SBA$ MS

    99589 - 1979-S SBA$ Type 1 PRDC
    99590 - 1979-S SBA$ Type 2 PRDC

    WIDE RIM:

    99571 - 1979-P SBA$ Wide Rim MS
    9574 - 1980-P SBA$ MS
    9575 - 1980-D SBA$ MS
    9576 - 1980-S SBA$ MS
    9578 - 1981-P SBA$ MS
    9579 - 1981-D SBA$ MS
    9580 - 1981-S SBA$ MS

    99592 - 1980-S SBA$ PRDC
    99594 - 1981-S SBA$ Type 1 PRDC
    99595 - 1981-S SBA$ Type 2 PRDC

    1999 REDESIGN:

    9581 - 1999-P SBA$ MS
    9582 - 1999-D SBA$ MS
    99596 - 1999-P SBA$ PRDC

The 1999 are a complete re-design from the "classic" 1979-1981 design, so calling them Narrow Rim or Wide Rim does not make sense.

I believe the 1999 coins are currently classified as Wide Rim in the PCGS type sets, though if anything they are more like a Narrow Rim in appearance.

More importantly for type set purposes, the difference between a classic and 1999 SBAs is more dramatic than the relatively minor difference between the Wide Rim and Narrow Rim designs.

I believe any of the following would make far more sense for type set purposes than what is currently being used (2 SBAs in type set, a Narrow Rim and Wide Rim):

    1 SBA in type set:
    Any date

    2 SBAs in type set:
    Any 1979-1981 date (Classic design)
    Any 1999 date (1999 redesign)

    3 SBAs in type set:
    Any 1979 Narrow Rim
    Any 1979-1981 Wide Rim
    Any 1999 date
